Student Success Stories
At FHSU, we're committed to helping you have a successful
future. You can read about just a few of the success stories below.
Gina L. Frohlich (B.S. 2006)
Doctoral Student in Clinical Sport Psychology
Argosy University
Phoenix, AZ
|
I am currently attending Argosy University/Phoenix
(The American School of Professional Psychology). After completing
my BA in Psychology at FHSU at the age of 21 I moved out to
Phoenix, AZ. The psychology program at Fort Hays prepared me
for the rigorous work and dedication I needed to be successful
at the doctorate level, especially at a young age. In addition
to my degree in Clinical Psychology, I will also be completing
a Masters in Sport Psychology. Prior to moving here, I spent
a summer in New York City completing an apprenticeship for the
New York Center for Children. Attending Fort Hays not only helped
present that opportunity, but I was able to speak about my growth
as a psychologist in training upon returning, and ultimately
make my decision to further my education. The faculty in the
psychology department at Fort Hays are one of a kind. They were
willing to dedicate numerous hours and continued to show patience
and understanding as I made decisions regarding my future. Not
only were they willing to help with the application process,
but they genuinely cared about how I was doing once I started
the doctorate program in Arizona. The Fort Hays psychology program
is one of the more well-rounded programs I have seen in my time
and I would recommend this program to anyone who chooses to
follow a career path that entails working with people. |

Maggie
Herman (B.S. 2006)
Counselor Trainee
Valley Hope
Norton, KS
|
I am currently working at Valley Hope in Norton,
Kansas as a "counselor trainee." I am in the process
of applying to receive my AAPS (Association of Addiction Professions)
credential to be a drug and alcohol counselor. I will graduate
the year long counselor training program provided by Valley
Hope on April 2nd of this year. I absolutely love my job and
have met some incredible people who come through Valley Hope
and need help getting their lives back on track. I not only
do individual counseling, but lead a small group daily and also
give lectures regarding addiction. The FHSU Psychology Department
prepared me by giving me a great understanding of people and
a framework of psychology and the human mind to build upon. |

Robert
Yates III (B.S. 2006)
Doctoral Student in Clinical
Psychology
University of North Texas
Denton, TX
|
The years I spent at Fort Hays State University
working on my Bachelor's degree in psychology were some of the
best years of my life. Because Fort Hays State University is
a small school, you get the kind of attention and help from
professors that is not possible at larger schools. I was able
to work with my instructors outside of class on research projects,
volunteer activities, conference presentations, and the publication
of a journal article. I don't believe that I would have had
those opportunities at some other universities. The experiences
that I had at Fort Hays State University enabled me to successfully
apply to a doctoral program in clinical psychology. Since beginning
the program, I have felt completely prepared to meet any challenge,
and I believe that is largely due to my experiences in the psychology
department at FHSU. |

Kristen Goodheart
(B.S. 2004,
M.S. Clinical Psychology 2007)
Doctoral Student in Clinical
Psychology
Texas Tech University
Lubbock, TX
|
The graduate program in clinical psychology at
Fort Hays State University is a great choice for individuals
interested in clinical practice immediately following graduation
as well as those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree. Completing
the masters program in clinical psychology at FHSU has benefitted
me as a doctoral student because it provided me with insight
about future education. I have found the level of instruction
that I received as a masters student to be at least as good
as the instruction I am currently receiving as a doctoral student.
At FHSU, the instructors are knowledgeable, experienced, and
challenged students to apply academic knowledgeable to the therapeutic
setting. Because I enjoyed my experience as a masters level
student, I felt comfortable committing to an intense, 5-year
doctoral program and was more confident in my ability to be
a successful doctoral student. |
