Program Director - Dr. Kenneth Olson

General Description

The graduate program leading to a M.S. in clinical psychology involves 60 semester credits of coursework in the areas of assessment, psychological intervention, practicum, internship, and research methodology. Most students complete this program in two years of fulltime enrollment. The M.S. curriculum is designed (a) for the preparation of individuals who will work in applied settings such as community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, and various types of residential
treatment centers, and (b) for preparation for doctoral study. Graduates are eligible to apply for master's level licensure in Kansas. An essential part of the clinical program is the training received in research methodology. This training is based on the philosophy that the most reliable foundation for applied psychological techniques is that of systematic research, and the professional worker should be able to understand and evaluate the research that contributes to that foundation.

Practicum and Internships

The required 14 credits of practicum and internship are designed to give the student practical experience and preparation in professional skills, in addition to exposure to the structure of a mental health institution. An essential part of this practicum requirement involves a 600 clock hour internship in an off-campus mental health agency under the supervision of a qualified psychologist. Major internship opportunities are offered at area mental health centers, state hospitals, adolescent treatment centers, and chemical dependency programs.

In addition to the off-campus internship, additional experience and academic credit are acquired through an on-campus practicum in the Kelly Center at Fort Hays State University. Staffed by clinical psychology faculty members, the Kelly Center provides therapy experience with college students and adults. This on-campus practicum must be completed prior to the off-campus internship. A maximum of 14 credit hours may be earned by practicum and internship experiences.

Other Program Requirements

A comprehensive exam is taken during the student’s second year of study and consists of two component parts: research methodology and clinical psychology specialty. All graduate students are required to complete a thesis.
