What is Form 1098-T?

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 states that educational institutions, such as FHSU, are required to file and furnish a Form 1098-T to students who made payments for qualified paid tuition and related expenses in the reported calendar year.  Form 1098-T is provided to help you determine if you are eligible to claim a Hope Scholarship, Lifetime Learning Credit, or the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction on your income tax return.

Can I view my 1098-T online?

FHSU has partnered with Heartland ECSI for the production and distribution of the 1098-T forms.  Students can “opt-in” and receive an electronic copy of your 1098-T.  An email from ECSI will include the PIN number and instructions necessary to access your information.  Students who do not “opt-in” can still access their 1098-T online.  Go to http://borrower.ecsi.net. You will need the following three pieces of information:

    Account = SSN without dashes
    Password = PIN number assigned by ECSI
If you know your PIN number, you can retrieve your PIN/login credentials on the ECSI website.  The ZIP Code required is the one associated with your permanent address that is on file with FHSU and is reflected on your 1098-T.  You can also contact the ECSI 1098-T Hotline at 1-866-428-1098.

Keep in mind that generally non-U.S. citizen students cannot claim the U.S. tax education credits, although some students are eligible if they are deemed to be Resident Aliens for tax purposes under the substantial presence test.  Review the IRS documents or contact your individual tax consultant for further assistance regarding eligibility criteria.
