Department of Sociology and Social Work at Fort Hays State University
offers five certificate programs:
Addictions
Counseling Certification Program (30 Credit Hours)
(All required courses are taught through FHSU's Virtual College
as on-line courses. Courses for this certificate are NOT taught
on campus.)

This
30 credit hour program provides students with certification to provide
addictions counseling services in the State of Kansas. This curriculum
is SRS/AAPS approved.

Introduction
to Addictions must be taken first. The Internship must be taken
last. The addictions counseling certification program is coordinated
by the Social Work program. The alcohol counseling certification
program is open to all students.

will not be awarded until you have completed the requirements
and informed your coordinator of same. You must inform
your coordinator by the 21st day of the semester in which the certificate

Concurrent
Social Work BSW Degree and Addictions Counseling Certification Program

All
Social Work Majors at FHSU may take advantage of the opportunity
to attain both the BSW and the addictions counseling
certificate on using the equivalency course content of the BSW courses.
Interested students complete the required BSW courses plus the additional
requirements listed below.

200 Clock Hours of the Social Work practicum includes Addictions
(in a AAPS-approved setting), that practicum will count in both
the Social Work degree and Addiction Counseling Certificate requirements.
Otherwise, the student will have to complete a separate two credit
hour practicum in Addictions consisting of an additional 200 Clock
Hours (in a AAPS-approved setting) to qualify for AAPS Certification.

Grant
Proposal Writing and Program Evaluation Certificate Program (9 Credit

Grants
from government and private sources provide important supplemental
funding to schools, hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and many
other social service agencies. Our department is pleased to offer
one of the few undergraduate grant proposal writing and program
evaluation programs in the nation. The skills developed through
this program can increase employment potential greatly as employers
recognize the considerable value and financial benefit of well-trained
grant proposal writers.

Community
Development Certificate Program (9 Credit Hours)

Astonishing
social and economic change presents urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods
and communities with uncertain futures and great challenges. Some
urban neighborhoods and rural communities are scrambling to stem
population out-migration, while others are dealing with population
growth and urban sprawl. Community development is a fast-growing
field of employment which addresses the social, physical, and economic
revitalization and/or restructuring of a neighborhood or community.
This certificate program provides the student with a base of community
theory uniquely offered through the Department of Sociology and
Social Work, and vital technical skills (such as strategic planning,
focus group research, and small group dynamics) to address real

passages, such as marriage, remarriage, childrearing, aging, and
death and dying. The Life Issues certificate provides students with
a background to work in human services fields.

Women's
and Gender Studies Certificate Program (12 Credit Hours)

Women
contribute to culture and society as both participates and creators.
Fort Hays State University offers coursework from diverse academic
fields that allows for a theoretically and historically based understanding
of the aspirations, accomplishments, and rights of women throughout
history. The Women and Gender Studies Certificate program takes
the student on a journey of exploration from the Enlightenment era
through third-wave feminism. Along the way, students take their
own excursions into literature, history, sociology, leadership,
communication, nursing, justice studies, and/or psychology. All
courses are intentionally designed for males and females, alike.
