Certificate Programs

The Department of Sociology and Social Work at Fort Hays State University offers seven certificate programs (three of which can be completed online):

Grant Proposal Writing and Program Evaluation Certificate Program (9 Credit Hours) (Available through the Virtual College)

Grants from government and private sources provide important supplemental funding to schools, hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and many other social service agencies. Our department is pleased to offer one of the few undergraduate grant proposal writing and program evaluation programs in the nation. The skills developed through this program can increase employment potential greatly as employers recognize the considerable value and financial benefit of well-trained grant proposal writers.

Required Courses:

  • SOC 670: Grant Proposal Development (3)
  • SOC 672: Program Development and Evaluation (3)
  • SOC 677: Internship in Grant Proposal Development (3)
Please Note: It is the responsibility of the student to inform the coordinator of the certificate program that he or she has completed the certificate requirements. Your certificate will not be awarded until you have completed the requirements and informed your coordinator of same. You must inform your coordinator by the 21st day of the semester in which the certificate is to be awarded to ensure that there is time for processing.

Community Development Certificate Program (9 Credit Hours) (Available through the Virtual College)

Astonishing social and economic change presents urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods and communities with uncertain futures and great challenges. Some urban neighborhoods and rural communities are scrambling to stem population out-migration, while others are dealing with population growth and urban sprawl. Community development is a fast-growing field of employment which addresses the social, physical, and economic revitalization and/or restructuring of a neighborhood or community. This certificate program provides the student with a base of community theory uniquely offered through the Department of Sociology and Social Work, and vital technical skills (such as strategic planning, focus group research, and small group dynamics) to address real world community issues and problems. Required Courses:

  • SOC 679: Community Theory and Development (3)
    and either
    :
  • SOC 475: Sociology of Urban and Rural Areas (3) or
  • SOC 436: Demography (3)
    and one of the
    following:
  • SOC 670: Grant Proposal Development (3)
  • GCSI 250: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (3)
  • (So... that is 9 hours total)

Life Issues Certificate Program (12 Credit Hours) (Available through the Virtual College)

This certificate program includes courses which deal with major life passages, such as marriage, remarriage, childrearing, aging, and death and dying. The Life Issues certificate provides students with a background to work in human services fields.

Women's and Gender Studies Certificate Program (12 Credit Hours)

Women contribute to culture and society as both participates and creators. Fort Hays State University offers coursework from diverse academic fields that allows for a theoretically and historically based understanding of the aspirations, accomplishments, and rights of women throughout history. The Women and Gender Studies Certificate program takes the student on a journey of exploration from the Enlightenment era through third-wave feminism. Along the way, students take their own excursions into literature, history, sociology, leadership, communication, nursing, justice studies, and/or psychology. All courses are intentionally designed for males and females, alike. You are invited to take these journeys with us!

Addictions Certification Program (30 Credit Hours)

This 30 credit hour credentialing program will provide students certification in the State of Kansas in addictions counseling. This curriculum is SRS/AAPA approved.This program will fulfill a critical need in the community to comply with KSA 21-4729/SB 123 requirements effective July 1, 2003. In most cases, this statute provides for mandatory treatment in lieu of incarceration.

Introduction to Addictions must be taken first. The Internship must be taken last. The addictions certification program is coordinated by the Social Work program. The alcohol certification program is open to all students.
