Welcome to the Sternberg Museum's "Herd O' Birders."

The Herd O' Birders (HOB) is a birding club open to families interested in learning about birds and the hobby of birding. We welcome all participants, from the beginner to advanced birder. Actually, having members with diverse birding experience will sharpen the birding skills of "the entire Herd," because less-experienced birders will learn more quickly from experienced birders and experienced birders will enhance their proficiency through instruction. Thus, everyone becomes a better birder!

The goal of HOB is to facilitate contact between fellow birders and give them an opportunity to associate at monthly meetings, participate in field trips, listen to guest speakers, and view the collection of birds in the Fleharty Range at the Sternberg Museum. The topics of discussion are member driven, with previous subjects including: where to bird in the area, landscaping and feeding tips on how to attract birds to your yard, sharing ideas about various bird guides, discussing different brands and types of binocular, and discussion about what birds people have seen and where. Typically, we cap the evening off by viewing a few bird specimens from the collection of birds at the Sternberg Museum and listen to bird calls in order to sharpen the birding skills of club participants.

Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, at 7 pm, usually in the Expeditions Room (former restaurant) at the Sternberg.

Monthly Meeting information
October 15 at 7pm -- Engel Education Classroom at Sternberg Museum
There will be coffee and snacks to munch as we hear from FHSU Biology graduate student Alex Galt what has been caught so far this year at the bird banding site on FHSU campus. Alex will bring a variety of pictures to view as he discusses how these birds are collected and the process and purpose of banding. He'll also give tips on what to look for when identifying the more difficult species, such as warblers, vireos, and flycatchers. Also, please bring along your favorite bird field guide so you can note Alex's remarks next to each species discussed.
