Starting Date: 2009-06-11 |
| Ending Date: 2009-08-13 |
Beat the summertime heat by discovering “Kool Kansas Kritters” at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. On select Thursday afternoons, future scientists will explore the critters that roam, crawl, swim, or fly across the Kansas streams and prairies.
Programs will accommodate children ages 4-12. We are offering two age-appropriate programs each select Thursday afternoon from 1-2 pm (for kids age 4-7) and 3-4 pm (for kids age 8-12).
All participants must be accompanied an adult that will stay with the child during the program. Maximum class size is 30. The registration deadline for each program is the Monday prior to the program.
Programs are free (except for Monarch Mania, $10 per child, Museum Members Free), donations are greatly appreciated.
To register, contact Brian Bartels, 628-5502, bcbartels@fhsu.edu
Kold-blooded Kansas Kritters! June 11 Registration Deadline: June 8
We’ll get touchy-feely with the scaly “kritters” that “krawl” in and out of Kansas fields.
Fur, Feathers, Claws and Jaws! June 18 Reg. Deadline: June 15
We’ll discover what makes a bird a bird and what makes a mammal a mammal by exploring the characteristics of these warm-blooded critters.
Exploring Giant Squid! June 25 Registration Deadline: June 22

Taking Flight! July 23 Registration Deadline: July 20
Ever wonder how bats, birds, insects, and even airplanes fly? We’ll take a close look at flight by building and flying a variety of paper airplanes to inspect which models fly best.
Who’s New?! July 30 Registration Deadline: July 27
We’ll get cozy with the cute and cuddly critters (snakes, lizards, birds, mice, and more) that have recently “hatched” into your wild world.
No Bones About it! August 6 Registration Deadline: August 3
The streams, creeks, and ponds of Kansas are full of invertebrate animals that look like something from a science fiction movie! We’ll use microscopes to inspect these “boneless” creatures and learn why they are an important part of the environment.
Monarch Mania! August 13 Fee: $10/child Registration Deadline: August 10 Join us as we learn about butterflies and build a caterpillar house so you can take home your very own monarch caterpillar or monarch egg to experience its transformation into a beautiful butterfly. Each participant will take home a monarch caterpillar or monarch egg…weather permitting!
