Northern Exposures: Aurora Borealis Photography by Duane Clausen

March 15-June 2, 2008

The dancing colors of the northern lights rarely grace the starry skies of Kansas. But on Michigan's upper peninsula, where photographer and amateur astronomer Duane Clausen resides, the awe-inspiring phenomenon appears more frequently. Clausen braves frigid nights to capture the magic of nature's colorful light show with his camera. He then shares it via large-format prints.

Wow! That Oughta Be in a Museum

September 13-November 9, 2008

What do erasers, orchids, and obituaries have in common? They're all things that Kansans collect! Both people and museums are driven by the same collecting impulse, but they often have different goals. This exhibit from the Kansas Museum of History features collectors and museums all over Kansas (including Sternberg Museum) through colorful photographs and interesting personal accounts. It explores the human drive to accumulate things while spotlighting some amazing Kansas collections.

Greensburg Meteorite

Beginning September 11, 2007

On the night of May 4, 2007, a massive EF5 tornado struck the town of Greensburg, Kansas. The funnel reached a diameter of 1.7 miles with maximum winds in excess of 205 miles per hour. Ten residents died and scores were injured when the twister leveled 95% of the town. Among the buildings destroyed was the Big Well Museum, which housed the famous 1,000 pound meteorite unearthed in the area in 1949. Workers later recovered the meteorite from the debris and it began a tour of the state as an extraterrestrial ambassador for Greensburg while the town rebuilds. Sternberg Museum presents this special display free of charge and invites visitors to contribute to the recovery efforts.

John Cody: Audubon of Moths

Ongoing & Everchanging

Dr. John Cody's introduction to the saturniid moths, more commonly known as giant silk moths or emperor moths, came when he was a child growing up in Brooklyn, New York. The cecropia he discovered outside his apartment building left an indelible impression on his young mind and sparked a lifelong passion to capture and share the elegance of giant silk moths through painting. He has traveled the world seeking out his subjects and has earned renown as "The Audubon of Moths." In this ongoing but ever-changing exhibition, Dr. Cody world-premiers each new watercolor he creates. His most recent painting hangs alongside a changing selection of older, classic works.
