Title of lesson: Dem Bones

Topics:

  • Math product- number operations
  • Math process- problem solving

  • Student level: 1st grade

    Objectives:

    Academic- The students will add and subtract the various types of bones from their bag of candy bones. The students will complete 18 addition and subtraction problems within 10 minutes.

    Social- Students will work cooperatively in-groups. (T-chart working in-groups)

    Materials:

  • Skeleton
  • Dem Bones worksheet
  • Dry Bones music
  • Bag of candy bones Dem Bones
  • Prerequisite skills: Simple addition and subtraction

    Time required: 20-30 minutes

    Group size: 2 students

    Roles: Recorder and materials manipulator

    Introduction of topic:

    Skeleton review

    Ask students how many bones in the human body (206)

    Introduce music Dry Bones.

    Students will stand, sing and point to parts of body while singing.

    Development of concept:

    Each group will receive one bag of candy and a worksheet.

    One student sorts the bones while the other records the data.

    Students will work cooperatively to complete the math problems on the worksheet.

    Positive interdependence:

    There will be effective communication between partners.

    Individual accountability:

    By having one student record and one student using manipulatives, students will be dependent on each other to complete the worksheet.

    Criteria for success:

    Each group will hand in a completed worksheet with at least 90% correct.

    Expected behaviors:

    Students will work cooperatively in groups.

    Monitoring:

    Teacher will walk around the room and offer help as needed, at student's level.

    Process:

    Ask students how they felt about their group activity and find out what they liked and did not like bout the group work.

    Conclusion:

    Finish Dry Bones song and collect papers.

    Evaluation:

    Assess each group's papers to see if they reached 90% correct.

    Extensions:

    If several groups do not get 90%, go over the worksheet as a whole group. Have two groups join together and add and subtract their manipulatives as a whole.
