Definition: Geography is the descriptive science dealing with the surface of the earth, its

division into continents and countries, and the climate, plants, animals, natural

resources, inhabitants, and industries of the various divisions.

Grade Level: 7th Grade

Unit Topic: Eastern/Western Geography-from Asia to Europe

Reid, Struan. The Silk and Spice Routes: Exploration by Sea. New York: New

Discovery Books, 1994.

Rationale for Selection: I selected this book because it has wonderful maps and

illustrations. I feel that at any level, illustration and maps help to enhance the

learning process of the student. I also chose this book because of its readability

level. It is at the appropriate reading level for a seventh grade student and it is

easily understood.

Review of the Literature: I think that this is a great tool for studying Eastern and Western

Geography. You are able to study the geography while they learn about an

interesting topic. This book discusses the routes that link the East with the West.

It tells us about the trade of spices and silk. Also this book breaks down this vast

amount of area into concise chapters. I would probably use this book a few

chapters at a time. It would be a great reinforcement of previous knowledge as

well as an introduction to the cultural aspects of these countries.
