Cooperative lesson plan
TEACHER INFORMATION
Title: Working with sound, probability and graphing
Standards: Science products - determine sounds by listening
when they hit the glass
Science processes - observing, communicating, collecting
and interpreting data
Math products - calculate probability and graph results
Math processes - calculating and graphing
Learning Styles: Gardner: musical-rhythmic, logical-mathematical, interpersonal Dunn & Dunn: sound, responsibility, self and team,
Objective: The students will demonstrate knowledge of sound by timing how long each glass rings, graphing by making a graph, and probability by doing a probability problem. The students will demonstrate cooperative skills by working in groups.
Student Level: Grade 3
Time Required: 25-35 minutes
Background Information: what sound is, how to run a stopwatch and how to do probability
Prerequisite Information: how to run a stopwatch and how to graph
Materials: Six glasses (glass & plastic)
Stopwatch or watch with second hand
Graph paper
Calculators
Forks
Water
Group Size: 4-5 people (5)Roles: Timer
Reporter
Material person
Recorder
Grapher (all)
TEACHING PROCEDURES
Introduction of Lesson: How many of you remember some of the graphing styles we did yesterday? Can anyone tell me some sounds that they hear during the day? Well today we are going to listen to some sounds and time them.
Development of Concept:
1. First talk about the sounds they hear during the day.
2. Ask what they think sound means.
3. Explain the activity and tell what the roles are.
4. Have groups do activities and graph results.
5. Ask what they think probability means.
6. Give them a problem about probability.
7. Ask if anyone knows how to work it.
8. Explain the problem.
9. Have different students share their graphs.
Positive Interdependence: work in groups
Individual Accountability: random questioning
Criteria for Success: did they complete the task at 90%
Expected Behaviors: work in groups, share and talk positive
Monitoring: Teacher will walk around to see if they need help.
Processing: Do you have any questions?
Conclusion: Have them show their graphs.
Evaluation: They will fill out an evaluation sheet.
EXTENSIONS
Use more glasses, use tupperware or metal glasses. Have different kinds of
liquids in the glasses. Try this with pots or bowls.
