Daily lesson plan

Fractions, decimals and percents

11-20-98

  1. Teacher Information

Title of lesson: Shooting and body on fire

    Topic: Math-process-communication, product-data analysis

Science- process- Applying, product- use of percents

    Student level: 5th grade

Objectives: The students will have fun while at the same time practicing their skill at fraction/decimal conversion and knowledge of percentages. Students take turns tossing a ball into a wastebasket, while they keep track of their makes. The students will also learn about the rule of 9 burn chart by which medics determine the percent on which a person is burned.

Materials: Tennis balls, racquetball, wastebasket, index cards, paper, pencils and tape.

Prerequisite skills: The students should know how to use a calculator, and how to toss a ball underhand.

    Time required: 20-25 minutes

  2. Teaching Procedures

Introduction: We will explain to the students what roles they need to do in order to follow the lesson plan. The class will be divided up in to three groups of ten, then each person will have a number of either 2, 4, 6, or 8. These numbers are the number of shots the students will be taking with the tennis and racquetballs in to the wastebaskets.

Review: We will review the underhand throwing motion to show the kids how to throw the ball.

Strategies: 1. We will put tape on the floor at different lengths from the wastebaskets.

    2. We will then pass out the balls to the groups standing in line.

    3. After the students have their turn throwing the balls, they will then go and record their shooting percentages.

    4. After the students write down their percentages, we will then begin to talk about the rule of 9 burn chart.

Conclusion: We will have a discussion on the rule of 9 burn chart after all the students have figured out their shooting percentages.

Evaluation: We will follow up by having some of the students compare their percentages with other students in the class involving the degree of difficulty in all the different shots.

III. Extension: We could incorporate safety along with the rule of 9 burn chart. Also we could use different sized of balls and see which ones are the highest percentage of makes and the lowest percentage of makes.
