Program of Study: 9 Hours

Reading and writing mean more than knowing how to put letters together to form words, sentences and paragraphs.  It means comprehending, constructing and critically synthesizing principles and concepts.  For teachers, pupil mastery of reading and writing is the difference between students who barely get by or drop out, and those who excel and proceed to higher levels of academic achievement.  This program is designed for practicing teachers who wish to increase their knowledge of reading and writing strategies and materials used in PK-12 classrooms.  Teachers desiring to participate in this program must hold a valid teaching license with a minimum of two years of full time teaching experience by the completion of this program.  THIS IS NOT A LICENSURE PROGRAM

Admission to the Program
Follow application guidelines for the graduate school as a non-degree seeking student at Fort Hays State University.

Continuation in the Program
All requirements for graduate students at Fort Hays State University are applicable.  In addition, students must maintain a 3.25 GPA to continue taking classes.

Completion of the Program
Students must complete all coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.25.  Students will then receive a Certificate of Completion from the Fort Hays State University Teacher Education Department.  NOTE:  Students deciding to continue their coursework to receive a master’s in education degree may include courses from this program into their plan of study.  However, all coursework accepted for a master’s degree at Fort Hays State University must be no more than six years old.
