Tigers in Service
This student-run program is designed to match volunteers with service opportunities in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Center for Civic Leadership, and the Office of Student Affairs, Tigers in Service is a clearinghouse for students with a desire to participate in community service activities.

March, 2006: Chicago, IL - Franciscan Outreach

Trying to beat the snowstorm heading towards Kansas, seven students left for their Alternative Spring Break to Chicago, IL at 11 p.m. on Sunday, March 19th. After arriving in Chicago, the volunteers worked with the Franciscan Outreach Association (F.O.A.), in their soup kitchen and homeless shelter. The group stayed on the third floor of F.O.A.’s Marquard Center which is where the soup kitchen is located. Seven other permanent volunteers also shared living quarters with the group. The seven Tigers In Service volunteers hang out with the permanent volunteers at the shelter.
Two Tigers In Service volunteers prepare a meal at the soup kitchen. Each day, half of the group traveled 20 minutes to the homeless shelter while the other half stayed to volunteer at the soup kitchen. The volunteers helped prepare the meals, organize clothes donations, serve the evening meal, and do extra cleaning that the regular volunteers might not otherwise have time to do. The group left on Saturday, March 25th after they had finished serving the evening meal and returned home on Sunday, March 26th.
