March 2008 : Tornado Recovery Greensburg, KS

Greensburg residents are still recovering from the EF-5 tornado that wiped out 95% of their beloved town last May. Tigers In Service volunteers were extremely excited to give up their Spring Break and lend a helping hand to the victims of the storm. On Monday, March 17th at 7:30 AM, the 20 Tigers In Service volunteers left for Greensburg. They arrived at about 9:15 and met up with their "Greensburg Guide" AKA the volunteer organizer, Matt. He explained that there were other schools there to help in Greensburg for the week as well (including a school from South Dakota, a school from Nebraska, K-State, KU, and Washburn). He put the excited FHSU volunteers right to work!

The first day was spent picking up debris (YES! There is still debris in some places!) TIS split into two groups and helped clean out 4-5 empty lots that afternoon!

On Tuesday , the TIS volunteers split up again to tackle a foster house that needed a paint job and an elderly woman's yard that needed to be cleaned up. They then went to the former Community Center/Preschool to begin a major debris cleanup.

Wednesday was the busiest day of the week. In the morning, a handful of our volunteers left early to continue cleaning the Community Center/Preschool that is now the future home of an RV park. It will be utilized by the construction workers that build in Greensburg in order to cut back commuting time and allow a place to sleep free of charge. Another group headed to help a family who's tree nursery was damaged during the storm (they had planted over 600 trees!). In the afternoon the group was split into a trio. One group went back to help clean up the rest of the trees, a second helped with a roofing project and the last went to the outskirts of Greensburg to help a family clean up their farm.

In the evenings there was a little down time. On Tuesday night (after a few more FHSU students, who are also Greensburg residents, joined us) everyone took a trip to the bowling ally in Pratt and had a blast getting to know each other a little better!

Wednesday night, the schools from South Dakota and Nebraska met up with our TIS volunteers and went out to the lake. They built a fire, ate s'mores and bonded while listening to Justin Greenleaf tell his legendary stories.

Special thanks to the CCL staff for the continuous support, the town of Greensburg for letting us join their efforts for a week, Matt Deighton for his assistance and leadership throughout the week and of course our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers!

Reflections: Volunteers' Firsthand Accounts

"This was my second TIS trip and it was even better than the first! It was so great to hang out with the friends I made on the first trip and become closer to them, and I got the chance to meet even more amazing people. The limits that we pushed ourselves to was an awesome sight to behold, each member of our group worked their hardest to help Greensburg! I wouldn't have wanted to spend my spring break any other way!!"

~Junior, Chelsea Wirtz

"This trip opened my eyes on how much damage a EF-5 tornado can do to a town, but how strongly it can bring people to together to give a helping hand. On top of that, I gained many new friends, some I can call a best friend now!"

~Sophomore, Tiffany Robben

"It absolutely astounds me how much people can do with the right state of mind. This was my first T.I.S. trip and I was blown away by everyone there putting others before them. It was an amazing time with even more amazing people to work beside and build relationships that will last. I will remember it for a long time to come and can't wait to go back!"
