January 2009: Hurricane Recovery, Padre Island National Seashore

Many parts of Texas were hit by Hurricane Ike last June. Padre Island National Seashore was just missed, however much of the debris washed up on the shores and a lot of the wildlife and environment was negatively affected. The spots for Alternative Winter Break ’09 were filled in what we believe to be record time, less than 12 hours!

“AWB was the best life-changing experience I have had so far in my life. I learned so much about myself and others that I couldn't help but fall in love the clear aspect of serving others! It was a great opportunity to learn leadership and service and apply them!”

24 Tigers In Service volunteers left Hays on Sunday, January 4th for a long 14 hour drive to Corpus Christi, TX. After laughing, sleeping, talking and singing for about 9 hours, the crew stopped in Waco, TX to rest before their week of hard work at the National Seashore. The volunteers hit the road again on Monday at 8:00 AM and arrived in Corpus Christi shortly before 2:00 PM. TIS drove a half hour to the work site and met the maintenance crew that would be “showing them the ropes” throughout the week. The 24 would begin work at 7:30 AM the next day (Tuesday).

TIS impressed the National Seashore workers and showed them just how tough FHSU students can be! The Padre Island National Seashore has a Sea Turtle Rescuing program in place. During ‘turtle season,’ the workers take UTV’s out along the shores and find sick and dying turtles or turtle nests. These vehicles are crucial in the process of saving the endangered animals, however the Seashore did not have enough room to store them. TIS volunteers helped pour the concrete and set up the foundation for a new garage.

TIS continued the long process of laying rebar, pouring, evening and smoothing concrete throughout the whole week. They were also privileged to aid in hurricane clean up along “South Beach.” In a total of 4 hours (within 1 ½ days), TIS volunteers picked up about 11 truck loads of debris!
After the long, sweaty and fulfilling days of work, the TIS volunteers explored some fun parts of Texas. Twice throughout the week, the volunteers indulged in some authentic southern food. The first adventure was seafood at Doc’s where some ate their favorite food from the sea, others enjoyed some traditional (but delicious!) food from the land and a few decided to try some new things.
“The trip was an unbelieveable experience with motivated fun people. I am so glad that I have been able to participate in these great trips. Not only do I meet new people and become close with them, I also get to help others in ways I never imagined. Because of T.I.S I will be a volunteer for life!”
