March 2009: Helping out The Family Tree in Denver.

After a lot of searching, Tigers In Service decided on the location for Alternative Spring Break 2009. From March 15th-18th thirteen college students visited Denver and helped out at The Family Tree and most of its facilities. “The mission of Family Tree is to help people overcome child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness to become safe, strong and self-reliant.” This organization has many facilities in the Denver area and provides many beneficial things to people who need help.

Asb_09 The trip to Denver was short, but the 13 Tigers In Service volunteers quickly formed friendships and the vans were filled with laughter and conversation all the way there. They arrived in downtown Denver around 8 pm on Sunday evening and showed up to work at 9 am the next day. The crew started at the Karlis Family Center and proceeded to help clean up the yards surrounding the building and cleaned the gutters. After lunch, they drove to the main Family Tree Administration offices for a short orientation about the facilities and schedule of projects for the week. Later that evening was almost everyone’s favorite thing. TIS volunteers planned crafts and brought treats to the House of Hope and hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Party for the kids at this facility. While some danced to music, others played board games and another group played ball! What an awesome experience!

On Tuesday TIS volunteers got a lot accomplished. The crew split into multiple groups and helped at the Administration offices in different areas, Women In Crisis, and an apartment. Jobs at these locations included, yard work, sanitizing toys, organizing food and toys, cleaning up a playground, sweeping, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, and washing walls to be painted. After a hard days’ work, TIS volunteers experienced a little more of Denver culture. They went downtown and had a wonderful meal at the Hard Rock Café.

The last day in Denver, volunteers headed to The Treasure Trunk, Family Tree’s thrift store completely run by volunteers and a fun way they bring in money. TIS helped clean, sort, fold, hang, organize and bring a little more order to the shop. Also, volunteers were honored to spend a little time shopping at the store and putting their money toward a wonderful organization!
“It is essential for our generation to find a love for serving so that we may set the tone for future generations to go far beyond what anyone has ever accomplished. Setting a great example now, will only encourage people to lend a helping hand more often without a second thought.”
