Holidays for Heroes (2006)

Tigers In Service partnered with Operation S.O.S for Holidays for Heroes for the third consecutive year for Make a Difference Day 2006 on Saturday, October 28. Holidays for Heroes utilized over 60 volunteers to pack 550 care packages to be sent overseas to soldiers in six foreign countries and four different branches of the military. Many of these soldiers haven’t had toothpaste, candy bars, or chips in at least two months. When soldiers receive their care packets, we hope they know that we are thinking of them and appreciate all of their hard work and sacrifices. Prior to Make a Difference Day, Tigers In Service also helped with the shipping costs by organizing a Dine-out Night on October 23 at Pizza Hut and JD's Chicken, raising $630.18 for the cause.
FHSU faculty members and students came together to pack boxes.
Some students arrived early that day to prepare the boxes. The goal is to impact the soldiers so greatly that they feel the holiday spirit no matter where they are. The volunteers are impacted because they realize how much our soldiers need our support and become much more appreciative of the sacrifices they make. Melanie Elliot of Kensington, Operation SOS director, has been the coordinator of this worthwhile project for the last four years. Without her hard work and dedication, Holidays for Heroes would not exist. Clarice Maseberg, a student at Fort Hays summed up the event with these words: “It’s a really great opportunity to help out people who have sacrificed so much.” The volunteers who participated really made a difference!
Part of packing the boxes entailed slipping letters in each box. Melanie Elliot and other community members put the event together. The assembly line of volunteers sped along throughout the day.
