Q: Who runs Tigers In Service
and what is it? top
A: Tigers In Service is a student-run
program designed to match volunteers with service opportunities
in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Center for Civic Leadership,
Tigers In Service acts as a clearinghouse for students with a desire
to participate in community service.
Q: When can I start? top
A: Get started today! Contact Tigers
in Service to set up the volunteer program or activity that works
best for you.
Q: What if I already have a
service project in mind? top
A: No problem. We are here to serve,
and we would be happy to help you with it or just plan it for you.
Just tell us what you're interested in, and we'll take care of the
rest!
Q: Are other college students
volunteering? top
A: Yes they are. It has been reported
that 46% of people age 18-24 actively participate in volunteerism
nationwide. This growing trend has made a positive impact all over
the country, and the students of Fort Hays State University are
accepting the challenge of creating positive change through community
service.
Q: Do I get paid? top
A: No. By definition, a volunteer is
a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to
undertake a service.
Q: What's in it for me? top
A: More than you might think. In today's
workplace, employers want to know that the people they hire will
be responsible and committed. Service and volunteerism on your resume
is a good way to show this. In addition, at the end of the year,
you and/or your student organization may be eligible for the Volunteer of the Year certificate or the Volunteer Organization of the Year award.
However, regardless of your standing at the end of the year, you
will get to meet new and caring people and learn diverse life skills
that will aid you in any path you choose to travel.
Q: What did the previous
volunteers think of the service they did? top
A: The best way to answer this is just
to let them speak for themselves:
"Volunteering has taught me
not only about current issues in our community, but about the underlying
reasons that these issues exist. I feel like I have been given the
power to go out there and really make a difference. I believe that
participating in community service has been one of the most rewarding
and worthwhile experiences of my college career."
-Lindsay Ronnau
FHSU Graduate
"Participating in community
service has enhanced my years at FHSU more than I could've ever
imagined. I think that volunteerism would be beneficial to any student's
college experience."
-Jacque McKenna
FHSU Graduate
"Community service is a great
way to make a difference in your community. Volunteering makes me
feel good...I am helping people and making my community a better
place to live."
-Mitch Hall
FHSU Graduate Student
Q: What type of projects would
I be doing? top
A: There are many diverse needs in our
community, state, and nation. We are always willing to help you
come up with something original and challenging. Some projects that
we have been involved with fall under our three core components
- Youth, Senior Citizen, and Community. These include, but are not
limited to, mentoring a child, helping with a school carnival, sponsoring
a youth organization, working with animals, working with the environment,
spending time at a rest home, delivering meals on wheels, helping
with household projects, and many more.
Q: Do I have to make a long
term commitment? top
A: No way. We know that most of our volunteers
have very busy lives. If you work or have a family to take care
of check out our growing number of exciting one-time events that
will challenge your organization and provide you with a taste of
the rewarding experience of community service.
Q: Can you help our organization
develop a year long service plan? top
A: Absolutely. An increasing number of
student organizations are answering the call to serve. Tigers In
Service can make it easy to schedule your next service project,
or create a tailor-made year-long service plan for your organization
by pairing your team with service opportunities that will fit your
needs.
