This
student-run program is designed to match volunteers with service
opportunities in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Student Government
Association, the Center for Civic Leadership, and the Office
of Student Affairs, Tigers in Service is a clearinghouse for
students with a desire to participate in community service
activities. |
Neighborhood Clean-Up
FHSU had its own group of NYSD representatives present
on the streets surrounding the campus. Hays Mayor, Kent Steward,
lives in this area and brought it to the attention of Tigers In
Service that after a weekend of partying, the area can be less than
appealing. Tigers In Service took on the mission of putting together
a group of volunteers to clean up the area. With the support of
the Hays City Commission, the Parks Department, Public Works and
local residents, volunteers took to the streets. The clean-up began
on campus with a three groups of student volunteers. The groups
headed off campus to take care of the designated residential area.
This phase of the project covered a four block stretch down West
5th, 6th, & 7th Streets. Nearly 80 volunteers worked for over
two hours beautifying the area. Residents were encouraged to assist
in the clean-up effort as well. The City of Hays generously donated
all of the supplies needed for the event.
