Tigers in Service
This student-run program is designed to match volunteers with service opportunities in the Hays area. Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Center for Civic Leadership, and the Office of Student Affairs, Tigers in Service is a clearinghouse for students with a desire to participate in community service activities.

Projects

Alternative Breaks – Alternative Breaks place teams of college students in communities to engage in community service and experiential learning. Students perform projects for community agencies and learn about issues such as literacy, poverty, racism, hunger, homelessness and the environment.

Book Drives – Textbooks are collected at the end of each semester from students willing to donate. The textbooks are then shipped to a national organization which either sells the books to raise funds for international literacy programs or donates them to countries with a shortage of books in their educational systems.

Bowl for Kids' Sake – Bowl for Kids' Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters' most important fund-raising event. For this fund-raising effort, students volunteer by asking for pledges from community members and businesses to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County.

Disaster Relief – Tigers In Service coordinates relief campaigns for the victims of natural disasters. Check out Super Green!

Elementary School Game Nights – Volunteers and parents coordinate and host a carnival and cookout for local elementary school students.

Food Drives – Food donations are collected from FHSU students, faculty, and staff to distribute to local food pantries. The pantries then give the food to local citizens who are in need.

Fund-Raisers – Tigers In Service partners with numerous organizations each year to assist with fund-raising. In the past, TIS has coordinated monetary collections, telethons, benefit breakfasts, book drives, and many other events to raise money for community agencies.

Kids Voting – Kids Voting is a program that combines dynamic, hands-on civics activities with an authentic voting experience to get elementary, middle and high school students involved and ready to be active citizens.

Make A Difference Day – Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service – Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans across the nation remember and honor Dr. King and his beliefs by making this holiday “A day ON, Not a day off.” As they have since 1995, individuals, families and groups will join in service projects to better their communities and neighborhoods.

National Youth Service Day – National Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world. Millions of youth participate in this international day of service every year. The goals of National Youth Service Day are to mobilize youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service, support youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and to educate the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.

Service Fair – The Campus-Community Service Fair is an annual event designed to raise awareness throughout the FHSU campus and the Hays community about the benefits of and opportunities for community service and service-learning.

Simple Service – Simple service projects provide a quick and easy way to give back to the community. Volunteers take about five minutes out of their day to decorate a picture frame, fill out a Mother’s Day card, or to complete another uncomplicated task. The gifts are then given to citizens of assisted living establishments in Hays.

Special Olympics – Tigers In Service collaborates with the Special Olympics to provide volunteers for many of their events.

Youth Mentoring – College-aged volunteers are matched with local at-risk youth to serve as a mentor. The volunteers work to improve the lives of children by acting as a mentor, role model, and as a friend.

Youth Tutoring – FHSU volunteers are matched with local elementary, middle, or high school students to assist them with their school work.
