Using Meta Tags

To give your content the best chance of being found and ranked by search engines, you can add META tag descriptions and keywords to your pages' <HEAD> content. Site visitors don't see this information, but search engines require it to index your site. It is also important to give your page a title so that it doesn't show up on the browser bar as "index.html."

Keywords should reflect the content of your page and also should be thought of from a user's point of view. In other words, what words or phrases might users type in that will bring them to this page? As seen in the following examples, keywords should be separated using commas. You can use up to 1,000 characters which is approximately 150 words in your keyword field.

<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="distance learning, precision farming, GIS, or whatever">

Descriptions should give searchers a good idea of what they might find on your page. They should be kept short, as search engines will only read the first 20 words.

META TAGS should be placed after your page title <TITLE>Fort Hays State University</TITLE> but before the </Head> code.

Adobe GoLive
To add a page title to a web page created in Adobe GoLive, click in the Page Title bar (it usually says "Welcome to Adobe GoLive"), delete the text that is there and type the title of your page in.

To add keywords, click the arrow in the title bar; this will open the head section pane. Drag the Keywords icon from the Head tab of the Palette to the head section pane. This will open a Keywords Inspector. In the text box below the scrolling window in the Keywords Inspector, type a keyword. Click Add, or press Enter. You can also select a word in your document, and choose Special > Add to Keywords. This command lets you insert a keyword tag with a single keyword or add keywords to an existing tag.

Dreamweaver
To add keywords to a web page created in Macromedia Dreamweaver, choose Head from the pop-up menu at the top of the objects palette. Then choose the Insert Keywords icon (looks like a key) and type your keywords or phrases into the dialog box that comes up. As always, separate each word or phrase with commas. Descriptions can be entered in the same way by choosing the Insert Description icon from the Head pop-up menu.

To add a title to your page, go to the Modify menu and choose Page Properties. Type in the title of your page.

FrontPage
To add keywords or to a web page created in Microsoft FrontPage, click on the HTML tab at the bottom of the page. Then follow the same guidelines as in Adobe PageMill.

To add a title to your page, right click on the Home Page icon in the Navigation pane, click Rename, then type in your title in the edit text box. Press the enter key to save the new title.

Net Objects Fusion
1. In Page view, click in the Layout area of the page you want indexed, or in the
MasterBorder or AutoFrame to index a set of pages.
2. Click the HTML button on the General tab of the Properties palette.
3. In the Page HTML dialog, click the Between Head Tags tab and enter META tags that describe your content. For example, type:

<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Large selection of valuable, high quality antiques and collectibles for any budget."> where the content is a one-sentence description containing the most important keywords site visitors might search for. Then type:

<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="antiques, quality antiques, valuable antiques, low-cost antiques, collectibles, jewelry, furniture, novelties"> where the content lists all important keywords.

4. Click OK.

Note: Most search engines index frameset files, so if your site uses AutoFrames or scripted frames, be sure to access Master HTML so your tags are added to the frameset file.

Netscape Composer
To add keywords or a page title to a web page created in Netscape Composer, you must be in the Edit mode. Go to the File menu and choose Edit Page. Under the Format menu, choose Page Colors and Properties if you are using a PC and Page Properties if you are using a Macintosh. Click on the General tab at the top of the dialog box that comes up. As you will see, you can now give your page a title, put in the author's name and add keywords. The title of your page will show at the top (in the title bar) when you open that page in a browser.
