Course Development

Thank you for your interest in developing a course for Fort Hays State University’s Virtual College. Beginning in the Fall of 2007 a new Course Development procedure was launched. The new procedures were developed with a focus on quality assurance for all courses offered through the Virtual College. Every course that is offered through theVirtual College must go through one of the three following types of processes:

  • Pathway I: Virtual College Course Development Contract For Quality Assurance - A course never before offered through the Virtual College.
  • Pathway II: Virtual College Course Re-Development Contract for Quality Assurance - Revisions to a course previously offered through the Virtual College.
  • Pathway III: Virtual College Faculty Self Produced Course Development Contract for Quality Assurance - A course developed for the Virtual College outside of an agreement with FHSU.

Compensation may be available for all three of these Pathways if the approval process is followed.

Faculty members who have ideas for new coursee should meet with their department chairs to discuss the idea. They should then ask the Department Secretary to submit a Virtual College Course Development and Support Proposal. The proposal must be approved by the Department Chair, Dean of the College, Graduate School Dean if applicable, and director of the Virtual College. An agreement must be signed by the Developer and the Director of the Virtual College before course development begins. The developer must work with the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technology (CTELT) throughout the development process. Finally the CTELT Course Development Advisory Committee must confirm the course completion and the quality of the course design.

Course Development Proposal Deadlines:

There are a limited number of course development spots each semester. In most cases courses are developed on a first request basis. Please submit your development proposal as early as possible.

  • Developing a course to be offered during the Fall semester must be submitted and approved by January 15.
  • Developing a course to be offered during the Spring semester must be submitted and approved by May 1.
  • Developing a course to be offered during the Summer session must be submitted and approved by September 1.

**NOTE: courses needing DVD development will need at least two semesters of development time.
