National
Wildlife Refuge
Listen to the wind rustle through prairie grasses
while skeins of geese honk overhead. The nearly 22,000-acre refuge
embraces
prairie, ponds, salt marshes, and even sand dunes. Waves
of shorebirds and waterfowl sweep into the refuge in fall and spring,
giving
rise to a symphony of bird calls and whirring wings.

Wings and Wetlands Weekend
Birds take center stage the last weekend in April.
This festival’s growing popularity will undoubtedly soar
with the creation of the Kansas Wetlands Educational Center. Already,
participation doubled from 2001 to 2002. Visitors ranged from Kansas
wildlife viewers to nature
tourists from New Mexico, New York, and Washington, D.C. Wildlife
viewers tallied 176 bird species in the 2002
weekend – a mouthwatering statistic for birders.
