Welcome to the FHSU Western Kansas String Academy
--for all who play violin, viola, cello, bass, and guitar, or wish they did!
WKSA provides a unique opportunity for string students throughout Western
Kansas to further their musical education through participation in one of
four orchestras, beginning guitar classes, mini music classes, and private lessons. Students, from
beginners to advanced, can expect a fun but challenging experience with
energetic teachers who have high standards for their students' progress and
commitment. The program's comprehensive approach to music education provides
a solid foundation for string players to build and extend their skill as a
musician.
WKSA, sponsored by FHSU's
Department of Music, is a collaborative education and community outreach
project. FHSU faculty and undergraduate music students, talented community
musicians, public school string teachers, cultural arts advocates, and
parents work together to support the goals of the program: (1) to develop
individual skills of young string players, (2) to train future string
teachers by providing hands-on teaching experience, and (3) to act as a
cultural and educational resource for the Western Kansas region.
WKSA is designed to complement and support the string teaching that occurs in
Western Kansas schools through the development of young string players and
through the training of new teachers.

News:
Cathy Drabkin, Executive Director of the FHSU Western Kansas String
Academy, is the first in the nation to be doing an American String
Teachers Association's "Discovering Strings and Orchestra" project this
school year, and she will be honored along with the other first-year
volunteer string clinicians at the ASTA Foundation reception during the
national convention in Albuquerque, NM the evening of Saturday, March 1.
Cathy has been working with the O'Loughlin and Lincoln Brownie troops
using FHSU music faculty and music majors and school orchestra directors,
as well as performers and loaner instruments from the FHSU Western Kansas
String Academy. "Discovering Strings and Orchestras" is a 5-session
program developed by ASTA to expose youths K-3rd to string instruments in
youth-group settings. The sessions include an introductory "Instrument
Petting Zoo", a lesson relating music to an academic subject, a first
group lesson, a session on instrument repair and making, and a field trip
to an area concert. For additional information about ASTA's new outreach
