Placement Guidelines

WKSA faculty and staff use the following guidelines to place students in different orchestra levels. Students need not have mastered all the goals and objectives of a particular orchestra in order to be placed at that level, although any student demonstrating all objectives of a particular orchestra will be placed, at a minimum, at that level.

Pre-Orchestra: No, or very limited, prior experience or contact with instrument
Goals/Objectives:
  Learn instrument/bow hold
  Play “Twinkle” Variations by concert time
  Identify different strings by name
  Note reading / rudimentary theory
   
Beginning Orchestra:
Goals/Objectives:
  Must be able to read notes.
  Identify dynamics
  Know basic bowings (slurs, ties)
  Be able to play a one or two octave scale
  Know basic key signatures: D, G, F, Bb
   
Intermediate Orchestra :
Goals/Objectives:
  Shifting into 3rd / 4th position
  Vibrato
  Dynamics from pp to ff
  Mixed / Complex meter identification
  Articulations: staccato, leggiero, portato, spiccato
  Some 3 octave scale work
  Note reading
   
Advanced Orchestra:
Goals/Objectives:
  Shifting into 7th position and above
  Active, musical vibrato
  All Dynamics/Tone colors
  Strong rhythmical sense at all tempi
  All articulations/bowings – including Ricochet, sautille, and up-bow staccato
  All key signatures
  All 3 octave scales in all keys
