Private Lessons/Policy

All WKSA students are required to take individual private lessons. This requirement comes from our belief that one-on-one instruction is the best and quickest way for young string players to refine their skills, to avoid the development of bad habits, and to develop the discipline of regular, careful daily practice.

Students and WKSA private instructors will be matched by Academy staff following orchestra auditions each semester, according to the Private Lesson Policy below. (If students are currently taking private lessons with another teacher and do not require a WKSA private instructor, the cost of attending the Academy will be reduced by $75 per semester. Students’ private teachers will need to sign the Application Form to verify their lessons).

WKSA Private Lesson Policy

1. All WKSA students will receive 10 private lessons per semester.
2. Lesson lengths will be according to the following guidelines:
Pre-Orchestra / Beginning Orchestra: 30 minute lessons
Intermediate / Advanced Orchestras: 60 minute lessons
3. Artist-faculty will keep time sheets of their teaching throughout the course of the semester. Students’ parents must sign/verify these records at the end of each semester.
4. Lessons will be taught at FHSU Malloy Hall without exception, due to liability issues. Generally, it will be recommended that lessons be taught on Saturday afternoons following WKSA morning activities, although other schedules may be arranged with your individual instructor.
5. If a teacher needs to miss a lesson, it will be obligatory for the lesson to be made up.
6. If a student misses a lesson without advance notification to the teacher, the teacher is not obliged to reschedule the lesson. If the student cancels a lesson in advance, it will be at the student and teacher’s discretion as to rescheduling.

WKSA Private Instructors:

Students may request a particular instructor if desired. WKSA will attempt to honor preferences when possible.
