Solo Competition

Click here to download a copy of the flyer and the 2007 registration form.

What is it?
  • An opportunity for WKSA students to gain valuable experience in working up and presenting a solo for a performance
  • A chance for four WKSA students (one each from Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced Orchestras and Guitar II Ensemble) to perform their solo with orchestra accompaniment, and
  • A good lesson for the WKSA Advanced Orchestra in how to accompany soloists.
How does it work?
  • Choose a solo piece with your private teacher. Work on it at home and in your lessons over the next five weeks. You can choose any piece you want to perform, so long as it's no longer than 10 minutes long.
  • Play your solo for our WKSA staff/judges on Saturday, November 3rd. (We'll schedule you sometime between 11am and 12noon). You do not have to have it memorized. You should not play with a piano accompanist.
  • Win a chance to perform your piece with the Advanced Orchestra accompanying you at a special concert in the spring semester (February 16th). One student from the beginner, intermediate, advanced orchestras and guitar II ensemble will perform their pieces (memorized) in the spring.
Who can participate

All students in the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced WKSA orchestras and in the Guitar II Ensemble are eligible to participate! Past winners of the solo competition may participate in the competition, but are not eligible to win for one year. Winning students must be available to perform at the February 16th recital. All participants must be in good financial and attendance standing with WKSA.

Why should you do it?
  • It's a good learning experience, and you might be chosen to participate in the spring concert, which would be an even better learning experience!
  • All students who participate will receive a free prize.
  • All students who participate will have their name entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate from Hastings!
