Graduate Students in NURSING: Please scroll to the end of the page for instructions about how to make an appointment with us using Zoom

All Other Online Students: If you are able to come to campus, we are happy to meet with you, and you should follow the instructions on our WCOnline portal to make an appointment. If you need an online consultation, the Virtual College provides writing consultations through Smarthinking.com. We apologize for any inconvenience.

What to Expect

At the Writing Center, we meet with FHSU students in 30-minute sessions about writing projects for any course. We also offer assistance with application materials. We offer questions, conversation, feedback, and strategies.

During the session, you will introduce yourself and your assignment, develop a plan of action for the session, and take one or two steps toward improving your project. Near the end of the session, you'll summarize your work and make a plan for next steps.

What We Expect

  • Bring any writing you have produced so far. You do not need to have anything written to meet with us, though!
  • If there is an assignment sheet, please bring it to your session.
  • Be ready to work actively during the session. We do not edit or proofread papers and will rarely be able to go through an entire paper in one session.

Appointment Policies

  • Please review the video below for instructions about making, modifying, or canceling an appointment.
  • You may book one appointment per day. Walk-ins are always welcome.
  • For a longer project, we recommend that you book a series of appointments for a maximum of 5 appointments per week.
  • We will meet with students about an online course if they are able to meet face-to-face in the Writing Center. The Virtual College also offers an online service called Smarthinking.
  • If you must cancel and it is not an emergency, please cancel at least 2 hours before your appointment.
  • Please come to your appointment at least 5 minutes before your scheduled time.

"No-Show" Policy

If you arrive more than 5 minutes late, we will record you as late. The first two times you are late, we will meet with you until the originally scheduled end time. The third time (and all subsequent times) you are late, you will be recorded as a "No-Show." After 3 recorded No-Shows, you will not be allowed to make appointments for the rest of the semester.

Please email WritingCenter@fhsu.edu or the Director with any questions or concerns.

Instructions for Graduate Students in Nursing

If you are a graduate student in Nursing, you may schedule 1-hour Zoom sessions by sending us an e-mail.

Step 1: Send an email to WritingCenter@fhsu.edu that offers at least three dates and times you might be available to meet online. Evening sessions are fine. You will also need to include a brief description of the type of help you need, the kind of assignment (e.g., research proposal, literature review, manuscript) and the assignment instructions.

Step 2: You will receive an email confirming the date and time of your session as well as the link you will use to access it.

Step 3: When it's time for your session, click on the link. If you have any writing to share, it will help to have it opened up on your computer in an editable format.

Step 4: If you need to cancel your appointment, please send an email to WritingCenter@fhsu.edu at least two hours before your appointment time.

If you have any questions, please email us at WritingCenter@fhsu.edu.
