Improving Quality of Life Through Economic Education
Many people throughout our region do not have the benefits of a formal business education. The mission of Fort Hays State University’s Center for Economic Education is to address the importance of ensuring financial literacy is a part of everyone’s life while delivering the financial fundamentals to sustain and grow livelihoods.
The Center guides teachers through continuing educational programs to gain a stronger grasp of the concepts, processes, regulations and language of economics, entrepreneurship and finance.
When teachers return to their schools, they continue to impart these valuable, essential economic lessons to thousands of students, providing them with a stronger head start in preparing for their financial futures. And, when students understand how personal banking, loans, investments, retirement planning and insurance work, they are better equipped to manage their personal finances in a more responsible and structured fashion. This program is another integral step that we are undertaking as a university to produce and provide for the next generation of transformative students and innovative individuals.
Our Mission
The Fort Hays State University Center for Economic Education promotes economic literacy among teachers. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills they need to succeed: to think and choose responsibly as producers, consumers, savers, investors, voters and participants in a global society.
In addition, the Center for Economic Education provides daily operation and management for Kansas DECA for the Kansas Department of Education. Kansas DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, management, tourism and finance. The Kansas DECA state office (housed in the Center for Economic Education) facilitates a variety of student events and activities as well as professional development for DECA advisors.
