Meet the March 2016 Students of the Month

On-Campus Student: Damion Cooper

Damion is a junior Health and Human Performance major with an emphasis in Sports Management from Salina. He is pursuing a certificate in Leadership Studies. On campus, he is part of many organizations including men's soccer, Encounter, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Outside of school, Damion likes to dance, mentor, teach, and play basketball. He got involved with the Department of Leadership Studies because he wanted to gain knowledge and experience in leadership because he knows he will need these skills and experiences in his future career. Damion also wanted to grow as a leader, servant, and follower. He felt the Department of Leadership Studies had everything he needed to learn and experience opportunities for him to grow into the best leader he can be. So far, his favorite leadership class has been LDRS 310, Fieldwork in Leadership Studies. Damion says it allows him to see the reality of who he is as a leader. The service-learning project allows him to engage with the community, expand his network, and he has the opportunity to work with professionals. Damion says "This class gives me the full nine yards to reach the tenth and not look back!"

On-Campus Student: Molly Madrid

On-Campus Student: Emily Brandt

Emily is a Political Science major from Beloit pursuing a Certificate in Leadership Studies. On campus, she is involved with Student Government Association, the Political Science Club, Alpha kappa Psi, the Public Safety and Awareness Committee, Fort Hays Honor Society, Heart and Mind learning community, Kansas Young Democrats, Women's Chorale, Brass Choir, National Residence Hall Honorary, Big Brothers and Sisters and she is an Orientation Leader. In many of these organizations, she holds a leadership position. Emily chose to get involved with the department because she has held many leadership positions and been told of her strong leadership skills. She was curious what made her a good leader and how to improve skills she naturally had. She heard about the certificate from a friend and knew it was an important step in advancing skills and developing new ones. Her favorite class so far has been LDRS 310, Fieldwork in Leadership Studies. She likes that the class is a total immersion project because not many classes on campus offer that. She says this class has been eye opening and does a good job of tying the first 2 certificate classes together. Outside of school, Emily likes to watch Netflix with her roommates, spend time with her family, volunteer, and garden.

On-Campus Student: Patrick McCluskey

Patrick is a junior from Great Bend majoring in Botany and perusing a Leadership Studies Certificate. On campus he is involved in Variety Fitness, outside of school he likes to play sports and video games and go hiking. Patrick got involved with the department because he thought it would be a good opportunity to set himself apart from others in his field of study and grow as an individual. So far, Patrick's favorite Leadership class has been LDRS 310, Fieldwork in Leadership Studies. He has enjoyed this class because he has met great people and has the opportunity to act in the community and make a difference in an important way.
