Dr. Michael Madden, professor of allied health and director of medical diagnostic imaging and radiologic technology programs at Fort Hays State University, recently received a $10,000 Undergraduate Campus Faculty Scholar Award from the Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.

Fort Hays State University ceramics will host a two-day workshop featuring Arthur Gonzalez on Saturday, Feb. 5, and Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. A world-renowned master of the ceramic figure, Gonzalez will demonstrate his hollow building techniques to capture personality and expression in the human face and form, said Linda Ganstrom, professor of art.

2nd year of Kansas Speaks, FHSU's Docking Institute survey of public, finds shifts in state's attitudes, opinions Most Kansans think their state is a good place to live, though not as many as in 2009, and, by a significant margin, more think the economy is "poor" or "very poor." These are among findings of the 2010 Kansas Speaks survey by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University. Between June 21 and Sept. 10, more than 4,000 Kansas households were contacted by mail and by phone and 1,002 completed the survey. The survey has a 3.1-percent margin of error.

Republicans Sam Brownback for governor and Jerry Moran to replace him in the U.S. Senate are "clear favorites" overall, in the words of the poll report's executive summary. Support for Democratic candidates Tim Holland for governor and Lisa Johnston for U.S. Senate, however, is nearly as high at the University of Kansas as for Brownback and Moran. President Obama, meanwhile, is far more popular at the University of Kansas, Emporia State and Washburn than at Fort Hays State. These are among the findings of the "Political Poll of Kansas Public University Students," released today by the Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University.

Mariana Timu-Faiai (pronounced tee-MOOH fah-EE-ah-EE), a Fort Hays State University alumna from Pago Pago in American Samoa, presented a gift to the university this morning during a visit to the Hays campus. Timu-Faiai dropped by the president's office and presented a tanoa to President Edward H. Hammond. A tanoa is a decorative wooden bowl used in the preparation and serving of the traditional Samoan beverage kava, made from the roots of the plant of the same name. The kava roots are crushed into a coarse powder and mixed with water by a Samoan maiden during ceremonial functions such as welcoming guests and at village meetings.

Fort Hays State University, which has doubled its enrollment over the past decade, had an official 20th-day headcount of 11,883 students for the fall semester. A year ago, on the 20th day of the fall 2009 semester, FHSU reported an enrollment of 11,308 students. The increase this semester of 575 students represents growth of 5.1 percent over the past year.
