Six students completed grant-funded internships in Fort Hays State University's College of Business and Entrepreneurship during the fall 2014 semester, the first in a new internship program for the college. Three entrepreneurial internships were funded by the Peter and Pamela Werth Foundation, and three northwest Kansas business internships were funded by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Six students in Fort Hays State University's Noyce Teacher-Leader program will live the life of teachers in southwest Kansas beginning in January. They will teach mini lessons, observe classrooms and attend school activities, doing many of the things teachers do. The students will teach in Rolla USD 217, Ulysses USD 214, Stanton County USD 452 and Hugoton Public Schools USD 215.

Fort Hays State University's Virtual College recently celebrated National Distance Learning Week, an annual event sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association, which promotes and celebrates the increasing growth and accomplishments in distance programs. FHSU currently provides more than 6,000 students in more than 20 countries the opportunity to earn online degrees. To celebrate its distance learning students, FHSU's Virtual College recently gave more than 100 free T-shirts to domestic and foreign online students, who then sent pictures of themselves wearing their Tiger T-shirts in local landmarks.

History figured prominently in the inauguration of Fort Hays State University's ninth president today as she became the first female president of the university. But the new president herself, Dr. Mirta M. Martin, had her gaze fixed firmly on the future, even as she made reference to the past. "We are a testament to the skill, determination and sacrifice of those who raised us up, and we are a guiding light that radiates far beyond the Kansas plains," she said in her inaugural address, referring to the history of the university, "Lighthouse on the Plains," by the late Dr. James Forsythe.

Along with findings that the Kansas governor's race is extremely tight, the sixth annual Kansas Speaks Survey, prepared by Fort Hays State University's Docking Institute of Public Affairs, finds similar tightness in public perception of the job performance of the two major political parties. One-third (33 percent) of respondents are satisfied with Gov. Sam Brownback's efforts to improve the Kansas economy, and 47 percent were dissatisfied. Satisfaction was higher among the younger and Republican respondents. Just under one-third (31 percent) of respondents were "very" or "moderately satisfied" with Republican leaders' efforts to improve the Kansas economy, while 43 percent are "very" or "moderately dissatisfied." Dissatisfaction was higher among the older and Democratic respondents.

Fort Hays State University greatly values teachers and strives to provide a quality education for the educators of tomorrow, and the university's Department of Teacher Education has recently been strengthened by a generous contribution from a Fort Hays State alum and anonymous donor. The donor was born and raised in Kansas and has loved school since the age of 5. This person was introduced to Fort Hays State in 1948 and began taking summer classes as a student. The individual earned an undergraduate degree in 1956 and, later on, both a master's and specialist's degree and then proceeded to teach for many years before retiring. Now, the donor has given $124,000 in the hope of helping students earn a quality education at Fort Hays State. The fund is an open-ended account, which means additional contributions may be made by family, friends or whoever wishes to support it.

The Half Century Club started the award in 2012 when they surprised President Hammond with an endowed $10,000 scholarship recognizing his 25 years at the helm of FHSU. In a broadcast world, you'd call him the producer," said Ron Rohlf, assistant professor of informatics. Tiger Media Network, which went live in fall 2013, combines print, radio, television and Web publication into a "convergent media model." Bell will supervise student writers, photographers, graphic artists, audio/video producers and Web developers.

An institution in Rabat, Morocco, is Fort Hays State University's newest international partner, after reaching a 2-plus-2 transfer agreement in information systems engineering with the International Institute of Higher Education in Morocco (IIHEM). A 2-plus-2 agreement allows for students to complete courses in a particular program and then guarantees its ability to transfer between institutions. "FHSU is always interested in partnering with highly respected universities to leverage opportunities for students of both parties," said Dr. Chris Crawford, interim provost. "This partnership is particularly exciting as we develop our Information Systems Engineering program. Naturally we see great benefit with having students of other nationalities come to our campus and interact with our student body."

Out of the past 54 Midwest Model United Nations Conferences in St. Louis, Fort Hays State University has participated in 53. This year, 19 students, representing Cuba and the United Kingdom, addressed a variety of world issues.

Dr. Jeni McRay's career at Fort Hays State University started in China, took a detour to Indonesia for another university as part of a U.S. Justice Department project, then returned to the United States, to Wichita. Where, in fact, she lives, but still teaches in China for FHSU. She is an assistant professor of leadership studies, teaching five sections of undergraduate leadership studies courses for two of FHSU's Chinese partner institutions, Shenyang Normal University, Shenyang (pronounced shinYAHNG), and Sias International University, Xinzheng (pronounced shinJUNG). She also teaches a virtual graduate course for FHSU's Department of Leadership Studies. The time in Indonesia, she said, was "amazing."

Linda Ganstrom, professor of art and design at Fort Hays State University, installed and co-curated an art exhibit with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, Wis. "Flow: The 2014 NCECA Ceramic Arts Invitational" will be the centerpiece of the NCECA conference exhibitions of more than 100 shows in the Milwaukee area. "Flow" features works from 20 artists ranging from a clay chrysanthemum to representations of sound waves. It is on view until Saturday, March 22.

Pinafore," or "The Lass Who Loved a Sailor," which promises an evening full of music and laughter as romantic sailors, sisters, cousins and aunts sing and dance their away across the deck of the British ship, the H.M.S. Pinafore, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in Sheridan Hall on the Fort Hays State University campus. The Gilbert and Sullivan Players, New York, perform the classic comic opera as part of FHSU's Encore Series.

Fort Hays State University will host its second Hays Startup Weekend from April 4 to 6. Led by the university's College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Startup Weekend is an event designed for entrepreneurs to meet, share ideas and launch new businesses. The three-day event is open to anyone with a great idea and the desire to make that idea a reality.

An injury and a resulting six-month trip delay allowed two College of Business and Entrepreneurship faculty at Fort Hays State University to take four undergraduate students and an MBA student on a research trip to China in January. Dr. Tony Gabel, an associate professor of management and marketing and the inaugural holder of the college's Lusk Faculty Member of Distinction Award, and Justin Evans, instructor of management and marketing and the college's international coordinator, conducted research on how international companies can best strategically account for the various legal systems in which they operate.

Fort Hays State University strives to offer its students the best possible experience they can have at a higher education institution. Much of that relies on members of the faculty, who are not only responsible for teaching and guiding students but also for inspiring them. Two English faculty members, Instructor Linda Smith and Associate Professor Brett Weaver, went above and beyond their duty as professors when they established a scholarship with the FHSU Foundation. The Brett Weaver & Linda Smith Writing Concentration Scholarship will be awarded to two junior or senior undergraduates or graduate students each year majoring in English with a writing concentration. Preference will be given to students with a 3.5 GPA or higher who demonstrate financial need.

Noted science journalist Chris Mooney will travel to Hays present "The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Robbins Center on the Fort Hays State University campus. This special presentation will be the 50th in FHSU's participation in the Science Café project. The discussion will be on the concept of denialism, or why people won't accept scientific facts for political or personal reasons. Mooney will describe the major findings from his last three years of reporting on the role of the psychological factors in promoting science denial.

Four undergraduate and one graduate student were able to accompany two Fort Hays State University College of Business and Entrepreneurship faculty on a two-week research trip to China in January. The undergraduates students were all seniors: chemistry major Seth Gooding, Haven (67543), finance major Amanda Groff, Hays (67601), finance major Matthew Whitmore, St. Francis (67756), and graphic design major Adam Wilbur, Wichita (67212). Aaron "Tres" York III, Indianapolis, Ind. (46219), a Master of Business Administration candidate, was the graduate student. In China, the team interviewed nearly 40 senior executives and attorneys, who spoke on the Chinese legal system and its impact on foreign companies.

The Fort Hays State University Alumni Association has welcomed a new student intern for the 2014 spring semester. Jade Singleton-Reich, a Denver, Colo., sophomore, is the new governmental relations student liaison. Singleton-Reich, a 2012 graduate of East High School, is a nursing major with a minor in Spanish. She is a VIP Ambassador, is the parent and family Senior Orientation Leader for the Future Year Experience team, a Tiger Caller, and is also a part of the Learning Community Go Global as the peer mentor. Singleton-Reich will work directly with the director of governmental relations at FHSU to aid in implementing and maintaining an effective legislative support network. Responsibilities include monitoring legislative events, maintaining public relations with the campus, community and state, tracking legislative activities, engaging in legislative research, and coordinating legislative meetings.
