Transferring Credit
Fort Hays State University accepts transfer credit from all regionally accredited U.S. institutions. FHSU also accepts military credits evaluated by the American Council on Education. AP, CLEP, DSST, Excelsior, and ACTFL examination credits are also accepted based upon the evaluation. International credits may also be accepted when evaluated by NACES members.
Effective Fall 2022, with the exception noted in the next bullet-point, all undergraduate degree-seeking students must complete the FHSU CORE program or the Kansas Board of Regents system-wide general education program. Visit fhsu.edu/liberaleducation to see FHSU’s current general education course requirements.
- Kansas Community College Guarantee: Effective Fall 2022, transfer students who have completed an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) program at a Kansas community college will have fulfilled all FHSU general education requirements. Transfer students must still complete all academic requirements, including major cognates, to fulfill the intended program of study.

Transfer Credit Evaluation
One of the major deciding factors of transferring to a university is how your credits will transfer. We understand the importance and we want you to know that our transfer of credit process is designed to maximize your success.
Course Equivalencies
FHSU has evaluated courses from many area colleges and universities.
Unofficial Transcript Evaluation
Fort Hays State University offers free transcript evaluation for prospective transfer students. This service is available for prospective undergraduate transfer students who have not yet applied for admission.
Once formally admitted to FHSU, the Registrar's Office will perform an official transcript evaluation at your request (or at the request of your academic advisor).
Military Credit Articulation
Kansas Board of Regents Military Articulation Initiative
Fort Hays State University works closely with the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas Collaborative on Military Credit to continue to find ways to evaluate and award credit for military training. This is an ongoing initiative that will eventually encompass all military branches. The following MOS designations have been articulated for the United States Army:
MOS 31B - Military Police
MOS 42A - Human Resources Specialist
Visit the Military Articulation Portal for more information on this initiative.
Credit for Military Experience & Training
Students registered at FHSU may earn college credit for educational experiences in the armed forces. Credit is awarded upon consultation with the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. Visit the Credit for Prior Learning page on Military Service Credit for more information.
Fort Hays State University also accepts AP, CLEP, DSST, Excelsior, and ACTFL examination credits. For more information, please visit the Credit for Prior Learning page on Credit by Examination.
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students to demonstrate they have the knowledge that would normally be acquired in an FHSU course. College learning can occur in many fields, but it must be in a field offered at FHSU to be considered in these programs. This knowledge can come from a variety of sources: Work, volunteering, community service, certifications, workshops, non-credit courses, or independent study. Visit the CPL website for more information.
Additional Transfer Credit Resources
Browse the resources below for additional information on how your credits may transfer to FHSU.
Curriculum Guides
FHSU has partnered with many two-year and four-year institutions throughout the U.S. and internationally. Through these partnerships, FHSU has created Curriculum Guides for many of our programs.
Seamless Systemwide Transfer
The Kansas Board of Regents has approved a growing number of guaranteed transfer courses. A student who completes any of these courses at a Kansas public university, community college, or technical college will be able to transfer the course to any Kansas public postsecondary institution offering an equivalent course.
Reverse Transfer is the process of retroactively granting associate degrees to students who have not completed the requirements of an associate degree before they transferred from a Kansas community college or technical college to a Kansas public university.
Transfer of Credit Appeal Process
We want to maximize your transfer credits to the best of our ability; however, some courses may need further evaluation. It's an easy process, just be prepared to plan ahead if further evaluation is needed. Please review our appeal process below:
- After you've been admitted to FHSU, contact your academic advisor or degree analyst to start the appeal process.
- Send course description(s) and/or syllabi (email or fax for quicker turn around) to your academic advisor or degree analyst.
- Your academic advisor or degree analyst will forward the course description(s) and/or syllabi to the department for evaluation.
- Typically, this evaluation takes up to two weeks.
- Once evaluated, your academic advisor or degree analyst will contact you to discuss how the course will or will not transfer.
