Bachelor of Social Work Garden City Cohort

The Department of Social Work has partnered with Garden City Community College (GCCC) to develop a 2+2 outreach program for students in the Garden City, Kansas area who wish to complete their social work degree from FHSU. Students may continue their degree by taking FHSU courses at GCCC taught by FHSU adjunct faculty members. Tim Davis coordinates the cohort program and is the academic adviser for all cohort students. Classes are held two evenings a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 6:00-9:00 PM in the Garden City Community College ACAD Building.

Applying to the Program

Individuals wanting to complete a social work degree will initially be considered pre-social work majors. Every pre-social work major must work with a faculty advisor in social work prior to applying for the program. Pre-social work majors must have completed 60 credit hours of coursework, including SOCW 260 Introduction to Social Work and be enrolled in SOCW 380 Generalist Practice: Introduction to Practice, before making formal application to the program. Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in each social work course, a 2.75 or better grade point average (GPA) in the major, and an overall cumulative GPA of at least 2.30.

The Council on Social Work Education accredits the Social Work Program at Fort Hays State University at the undergraduate level. In accord with the Council on Social Work Education's evaluative standards, the Social Work Program does not grant academic credit for life experience or previous work experience. "I am from Encarnacion de Diaz, Jalisco, Mexico. My parents brought me to Garden City, KS when I was about 3 years old. I chose the social work program because I love to help people. My parents taught me to respect people and to be grateful for what I had. I know how much my parents struggled when they moved here from Mexico. They learned to adapt to the culture here and had trouble raising us kids because it is a different culture. I hope to help families that are immigrating here and are having trouble adjust to the American culture.

I love to help people because of how good I have been treated in Garden City, KS. Helping people comes natural to me, and I want to learn how to help people in so many ways. I would mostly like to advocate for children and the elderly because they are the most vulnerable. We have many refugees coming to Garden City and I think it would be so awesome to help them and give back to my community.

I love the social work program, because it teaches you different things that you can apply to in any job or just life itself. I love learning about cultures and social welfare. I love Fort Hays State University because it is so flexible! I love how we have face-to face classes here in Garden City and it is awesome that I can work on my bachelors' degree from home.

When I'm not going to classes or working, I love spending time with my family. I love animals and enjoy volunteering for my church. I have worked with children and they have taught me to have more patience and to love unconditionally. I've also worked with elderly as a certified nurse assistant. I simply enjoy helping the elderly because I didn't grow up with my grandparents close and have learned to respect life from being so close to death.

I hope to become the best social worker I can be and give back to my community!"
