As part of the nation wide Earth Science awareness campaign FHSU Department of Geosciences hosts events and contests throughout the month of October.

How will we celebrate Earth Science Week in 2022?
We plan to celebrate big and small, local and global, in-person and remote. We have a new array of week-long and daily activities planned, highlighting the importance of living and building sustainable habits in our lives.
DAILY ACTIVITIES
Sunday, Oct. 9th - Earth Cache Day
Explore geological wonders, firsthand.
Visit an EarthCache and learn from the rocks under your feet. An EarthCache is a special type of geocache you can visit to learn a geology lesson developed by the community.
How to find your first EarthCache
- Create a Geocaching.com account.
- Go to 'Play' and use Filter to show only EarthCache locations.
- Visit a cache and log your find!

Join us for our first big event of Earth Science Week 2022. Our guest speakers will be covering topics such as how water sheds and storm water systems work as well as how your actions affect the water around you every day.
A portion of the presentation will also be providing information and instructions for the storm water clean-up activity planned immediately following the presentation
Community Compost Clean-up
4:00-6:30 PM
Join us to help clean up the community compost area behind the Hays Public Works Office at 13th & General Custer Road.
Meet in front of Tomanek Hall at 3:45 to coordinate car pool to the clean-up location.
Tuesday, Oct 11th - Earth Observation Day, No Child Left Inside Day

Go on-line or get Outside and observe the earth around you. We challenge you to find 11 significant changes that have occurred in your local environment over the last year.

Friday, Oct. 14th - Geological Map Day
MapRoulette Challenge
Join in the MapRoulette Challenge: Oct. 9th - Nov. 19th
Data that is part of Open Street Map, is not only used for GPS navigation, but everything from cell phones companies try to figure out locations to put new towers, gas companies figuring out where to run gas lines, and military applications. With this challenge you can help fix real world data sets.
- To participate in this challenge, go to https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new and create an account.
- Once your account is created, go to https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/25231 for the challenge.
- Click start, read the instructions for what to do. This will vary slightly between locations. Click edit. If the features need to be edited. This will open a new tab in your browser, make the necessary edits to the feature/features.
- In the top right click save once complete. You can either close this tab after saving or just click the challenge tab (the edit tab will automatically refresh when you start another edit).
- Once on the challenge tab again, select whether you completed the challenge, it was too hard, it was already fixed or if it was an issue. Click submit and the next features needing edited is automatically selected.

Sunday, Oct. 16th - National Fossil Day Celebrated at Sternberg Museum
Sternberg Museum of Natural History is offering free admissions in honor of National Fossil Day this week.
Sunday, October 16th celebrate Earth Science Week, National Fossil Day and Yellowstone National Park. Admission is free and special programming will be available for visitors of all ages.

American Geosciences Institute, Earth Science Week WEBINAR SERIES
In collaboration with Earth Science Week program partners, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to invite students, educators, geoscience professionals, and others to participate in the "Earth Science for a Sustainable World" Webinar Series during Earth Science Week (October 9-15, 2022) and/or view recordings after the event.

This webinar series will cover an array of thought-provoking, timely topics relating to the Earth Science Week 2022 theme of "Earth Science for a Sustainable World." Aimed at the general public and education community, the series features:
- "Working Toward a Sustainable World: Geoscience Projects Related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," Mr. Carlos Martinez, Ms. Renée Mazurek, Mr. Max Brouwers, Dr. Futoshi Nakamura, and Dr. E. Sahle-Demessie, Dr. Matt Hansen, 1 p.m. EDT, Tuesday, October 11, 2022. Six presentations explore case studies and associated ArcGIS StoryMaps.
- "Working to Promote Earth Science for a Sustainable World," Mr. Gabriel do Nascimento Cardoso and Dr. Kirsten Nicholson, 1 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, October 12, 2022. Speakers discuss three Geoscientists Without Borders® projects.
- "The Science of Keeping Materials in the Loop," Dr. Ola Isaksson, Dr. Federico Magalini, and Dr. Luis Tercero Espinoza, 1 p.m. EDT, Thursday, October 13, 2022. Talks address urban mining/anthropogenic raw materials and concepts of and design for circular economy.
- "Updating Soil Survey to Meet Dynamic New Challenges, and Sustainable Soils for a Sustainable Planet," Dr. Tiffany Carter and Dr. Skye Wills, 1 p.m. EDT, Friday, October 14, 2022. Speakers examine soil science through the lens of sustainability.
Registration is required. Webinars will have a live question-and-answer period with presenters. Webinars will be available in 62 languages with multilingual captioning. Recordings will be available following the weeklong series.
Select webinars will be live-streamed at AGI Booth 1908 in the Exhibit Hall of the Geological Association of America's GSA Connects 2022 Conference in Denver, Colorado, October 10-12, 2022. Attendees are invited to join in this live viewing experience.

For Earth Science Week 2022, the American Geosciences Institute invites you to enter the “Striving for Sustainability Globally” video contest. Submit a brief, 30-90 second, original video on how people are using the Earth sciences to make decisions that maintain and strengthen the planet’s ability to support thriving life.
Your video entry could take almost any form. A public service announcement? An animated cartoon? A video incorporating your own original music? An audio interview with a family member or even a professional geoscientist? Some other format? You decide. Show how people of various backgrounds around the world use geoscience to strive for sustainability!

Earth Science Week AGI Photography Contest https://www.earthsciweek.org/contests/photography
AGI is sponsoring a photography contest to celebrate Earth Science Week 2022. The photography theme for this year is: “Sustainability in Action.” Sustainable practices promote the planet’s capacity to support life throughout the biosphere, which involves interactions with other Earth systems such as the geosphere, the hydrosphere, and the atmosphere. How does geoscience knowledge help support sustainability where you live? Use your camera to capture an image of the ways geoscience informs local efforts to build a sustainable world.

National Fossil Day Art Contest

Theme “The Age of Mammals in our National Parks and Monuments”
Submissions Due: Oct. 1st
Your artwork should focus on the art contest theme “The Age of Mammals in our National Parks and Monuments”. It can include one or more fossil representative, prehistoric organism, and/or prehistoric scene from one or more National Park Service sites but the artwork must include the name of the parks or monuments they come from. We would also like to know why you chose that particular fossil and park as your subject in the statement you provide in the registration form. The artwork can be in the form of a photograph (black & white or color), a painting, a drawing, or a sketch. All artwork must be 2D and flat.

International Archaeology Day - Oct. 15th
(celebrated throughout the month of October)

International Archaeology Day (IAD) is a celebration of archaeology and its contributions to society. During October there are multiple hosted archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. Check out the International Archaeology Day events calendar to check out the presentations, virtual tours, and other activities.

What is Earth Science Week and Why celebrate?
The American Geological Institute established Earth Sciences Week in 1998 to raise awareness of the geosciences and their importance to society. It is supported by the US Geological survey, NASA, NOAA, the National Park Service, and the AAPG Foundation.
"What does it mean to see the world through eyes informed by the geosciences? Earth scientists use many types of visualizations - graphic representations of data and information - to show what we know about how our planet's geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere interact. Earth Science Week 2015 focuses on the theme of 'Visualizing Earth Systems', exploring visualization methods ranging from traditional charts, graphs, diagrams, illustrations, and still images to videos, computer-generated animations, and 3D-printed creations.
