2022 Schedule of Events
November 14-19
Each year, over 100,000 Americans actively participate in Geography Awareness Week. Established by Presidential proclamation over 30 years ago, this annual public awareness program organized by National Geographic Education Programs (NGEP) encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the interconnectedness of our world.
This year we plan to explore
The World of Possibilities
with events tied to the 5 themes of Geography.

11/14 Monday
Learning Geographic Locations the FUN way
9:30 am - 11:30 am
FHSU Campus, Tomanek Hall 121
Guest Speaker, Robert Reynolds, founder of Click and Learn Software will be giving a short presentation and demonstration using software gaming principles to improve learning geographic concepts. Participants will received a free registered account to continue creating and playing custom games following the presentation.
This is a 2 part presentation:
- 9:30-10:30 am Will be a Hands-on presentation designed to show attendees how to use the software to see how quickly learning can occur. PLUS the opportunity to play a local geography game created specifically for FHSU.
- 10:30-11:30 am Attendees will be shown how to create their own channel to create their own learning games on any topic.

The Geosciences Club and Geosciences Seminar class students will be hosting 2 tables in the Union.
Table 1: Stop by to find out what Geography Awareness Week is all about! Information will be provided on events through out the week. And, find out more about how Geosciences is out of this world.
Table 2: Test your world knowledge and awareness! Stop by our Trivia table. Let us quiz you on your world geography knowledge and see if you can win a sweet treat.

Campus Clean-up Challenge
4:00 pm meet in front of Tomanek Hall
Join fellow students and campus community members in a campus clean up challenge. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Lets see who can clean up the most trash AND bring back the most aluminum cans for recycling!

Curious about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and want to know (or share) how the daily applications of GIS may be impacting you? GIS Day @GeoFHSU is part of a nationwide event to promote awareness of GIS and how we use this evolving tool to analyze the world.Developing GIS Data Towards Serving the Community

My Academic Roadmap: Research, Stories, and Advice from a Geographer
Special Guest Speaker: Michelle Saunders, Ph.D

FHSU Campus, Center for Applied Technology, Room 120
Join us for this special presentation as Dr. Saunders speaks about her current path in academia, highlighting some of the important decisions she has made, sharing the best advice she has received along the way, and giving short summaries of her current and previous research.
Anyone interested in emergency preparedness, weather predictions, emergency/hazard post response is welcome to attend. Dr. Saunders current and previous research is oriented around vulnerability, risk perception, and decision-making in the face of severe weather.
Refreshments and time to visit with the presenter will be available.
Dr. Michelle Saunders is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Applied Social Research at the University of Oklahoma. She is currently researching the impact of using more accurate satellite radar images of weather patterns in national weather service forecasts and emergency management. Her goal is to figure out why people make decisions during weather events and to improve the communication of weather hazards to the public.

MapRoulette Challenge
Join in the MapRoulette Challenge: Oct. 9th - Nov. 19th
Data that is part of Open Street Map, is not only used for GPS navigation, but everything from cell phones companies try to figure out locations to put new towers, gas companies figuring out where to run gas lines, and military applications. With this challenge you can help fix real world data sets.
- To participate in this challenge, go to https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new and create an account.
- Once your account is created, go to https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/25231 for the challenge.
- Click start, read the instructions for what to do. This will vary slightly between locations. Click edit. If the features need to be edited. This will open a new tab in your browser, make the necessary edits to the feature/features.
- In the top right click save once complete. You can either close this tab after saving or just click the challenge tab (the edit tab will automatically refresh when you start another edit).
- Once on the challenge tab again, select whether you completed the challenge, it was too hard, it was already fixed or if it was an issue. Click submit and the next features needing edited is automatically selected.
