GIS Day at FHSU
November 13, 2019
Each year in celebration of GIS Day, the FHSU Geosciences Department hosts guest speakers, an open house, and workshops or activities that illustrate how GIS impacts our daily lives. We often also host activities and opportunities to highlight career opportunities in GIS Fields. Participating students can visit with guest speakers and GIS specialists to learn more about applications in GIS and career opportunities.
Students, faculty, staff, and the public are welcome to participate in any event celebrating GIS Day!
MORNING SESSION
9:00 am - 12:00 am Open House
Tomanek Hall 121
Plan to visit the FHSU Geosciences GIS Lab, Tomanek Hall 121. In the lab you will be able to view a short presentation on GIS, explore the technology and applications of GIS, and visit with geosciences students working in the lab.
LUNCH
11:30 - 13:30 Lunch (for presenters & attendees)
Tomanek Hall 227
- RSVP required to geosciences@fhsu.edu.
- Enjoy free pizza for all GIS Day participants and speakers. This is a good opportunity to ask any additional questions you may have about applications in GIS, career opportunities, and building personal skills in GIS.
WORKSHOP
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm "The Basics of GIS"
hosted by Dr. Richard Lisichenko, Geology Faculty, FHSU
Tomanek Hall 121
Stop by the GIS Lab for a public workshop session on an introduction to GIS. We will help you answer the questions: What is GIS? What can it do? and How does it apply to me? Special workshop for individuals who want a crash course in GIS as well at those who want to learn a little more about this versatile system of collecting and utilizing data. Anyone welcome to stop by, check out the lab, and participate in the public workshop session.
GUEST SPEAKERS
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm "GIS: Students Mapping the Way"
by FHSU Geosciences Graduate Students Gary Kelner, Alex Lyles, and Kara Sill
Tomanek Hall 108
In celebration of GIS Day, we have three special guest speakers joining us to talk about various aspects of applications of Geographic Information Systems from a student perspective. This will be a very interesting and engaging presentation as select current geosciences graduate students expand on experiences attending an international conference, applying GIS and remote sensing technologies to thesis work, and utilizing GIS in work and research.
What is GIS, What is GIS Day, and Why celebrate?
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) have transformed almost every aspect of society by providing the means to spatially describe and analyze our environment. Whether at the local, regional, national, or global scale, GIS provides the tools to solve spatial problems and find solutions.
GIS Day is a grassroots global event that was introduced in 1999 to enhance public awareness of the substantial contributions of GIS technology to our lives. Once again, Fort Hays State University will participate with an open house, presentations, demonstrations, and workshops. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to learn more about GIS and how to use it.
