Fort Hays State University's Science and Mathematics Education Institute's first-place winner from the recent MakerSpace holiday ornament competition was Jenna Klein, Abilene sophomore, who won a $25 Applebee's gift card.

The second-place winner was Amelia Richter, Dodge City freshman, and in third place was Jacob Schneider, WaKeeney freshman. Each received a $15 Applebee's gift card.

"It was our largest competition so far with over 35 entries," said Cari Rohleder, project director of SMEI.

"We started the Makerspace Holiday Ornament Competition in 2014, and each year has been exponentially better than the last," she said.

MakerSpace, an area in Forsyth Library for any FHSU student or Hays community member to build, tinker and explore projects and ideas within the science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) fields, is in Forsyth Library, room 062.
