HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason has been selected as a recipient of the NASPA Annual President’s Award, one of the highest honors in student affairs leadership. The award recognizes distinguished contributions to the profession and extraordinary commitment to student success, leadership, and service.
Mason will be formally honored during the 2026 NASPA Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 10, where she will also deliver remarks during the NASPA and NASPA Foundation Award Celebration. Her recorded remarks will be made available following the event.
“To receive the NASPA President’s Award is a profound honor,” Mason said. “I have a heart full of gratitude to the NASPA leadership, to the selection committee, and most importantly, to God, for the grace that has guided my journey.”
A first-generation college student, Mason credited student affairs professionals and faculty members for shaping her academic and professional path.
“My life was forever changed because a group of student affairs professionals and faculty chose to see my potential,” she said. “They taught me that our greatest impact comes when we lead with integrity and follow with love.”
Throughout her career, Mason has been recognized nationally for her leadership, advocacy for student success, and dedication to excellence. As president of Fort Hays State University, she has championed access, affordability, workforce preparation, and community engagement, while strengthening partnerships across Kansas and beyond.
“This recognition is a tribute to the mentors who guided me, the colleagues who stood by my side, and the students who challenged and inspired me,” Mason said. “To the NASPA community: thank you for being my professional home and for providing the leadership opportunities that allowed me to grow.”
Mason emphasized the importance of compassion, collaboration, and care in navigating the evolving challenges of higher education.
“We all know that the landscape of higher education has become increasingly complex and challenging,” she said. “In moments when you feel overwhelmed, I want to remind you: Your work matters. You matter. We can only lead our students if we lead each other with that same spirit.”
She also expressed gratitude to colleagues at Fort Hays State University and Valley City State University, where she previously served as president.
“Thank you, NASPA, for this incredible honor, to my Fort Hays and Valley City colleagues, and thank you all for the heart you pour into our students every single day,” Mason said.
NASPA is the leading association for student affairs professionals in higher education, representing more than 15,000 members worldwide. The President’s Award honors individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership, integrity, and lifelong dedication to the profession.
