FHSU Open House hosts 21st Annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days April 27-May 1

HAYS, Kan. –Fort Hays State University is hosting an open house on Friday, May 1. We invite you to walk around our campus and visit our buildings. As part of the Open House, you can also witness the annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD). The University is happy to invite community members to campus to view the various projects completed by our students, staff, and faculty.
Special activities include academic posters, art and creative works, musical performances, a community-engaged and open educational resources showcase, and applied industrial technology projects. Showcased creations feature work from the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship, the College of Education, the College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, and the Peter Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics.
SACAD 2026 will take place in a hybrid format by featuring both online and in-person showcases. Online academic posters and creative works will be available from April 27 to May 1. In addition to our open house on May 1, all academic posters and some creative works can be viewed from April 27 to May 1 through the FHSU Scholars Repository (https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad/).
In-person works will take place on campus on May 1.
- 8 a.m - 3 p.m. - Academic posters will be on display in the Memorial Union Ballroom and Black and Gold Room (with presenters available from 1-3 p.m.)
- 8 a.m - 3 p.m. - Community-engaged showcase will be located in the Memorial Union Ballroom (project team collaborators will be present)
- 10 a.m - 4 p.m. - Art and creative works can be viewed in the Schmidt Foundation Center for Art and Design (with some artists available from 3-4 p.m.)
- 8 a.m - 3 p.m. - Open educational resources (OER) showcase will be located in the Memorial Union Ballroom (OER contributors available from 1-3 p.m.)
- Times to be determined - Musical performances will be conducted in the Memorial Union Sunset Atrium (by the piano)
- 8 a.m - 3 p.m. - Applied industrial technology projects can be observed in Gross Memorial Coliseum, Gate 2 (with creators available from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.)
The Fort Hays State University Foundation and Alumni Office, as well as Admissions, will provide transportation across campus, and parking is free. Light refreshments will be available at most buildings listed above, with additional food and drink options available for purchase from the Union Catering Company within the Memorial Union. Additionally, cotton candy and popcorn will be served in the quad (limited to the first 200 attendees).
SACAD is named in honor of the late Dr. John F. Heinrichs (1957-2014). A popular Geosciences professor, an internationally renowned Arctic researcher, and esteemed colleague, Dr. Heinrichs had a tremendous impact on Fort Hays State University. He was a key supporter of faculty and student research, and his efforts were largely responsible for launching Research and Creative Activities Week, now known as John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days, in his honor.
