About Tomi:
Tomi Dechant is an instructor of Political Science at Fort Hays State University, where she has taught online courses since 2016, and a Lead Research Associate at Westat. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Fort Hays State University in 2007 and a Master of Public Administration from Kansas State University in 2010.
With experience spanning education research, systems thinking, public policy, curriculum development, and higher education, Tomi is passionate about helping learners connect academic concepts to real-world issues. Her professional background includes work on state and national political campaigns, legislative drafting, and service with the Department of Defense and Department of Education. In her current role, she leads training, curriculum development, and professional learning that supports large-scale national education assessments
Tomi's research interests include higher education policy, student success strategies, civic engagement, and educational equity. As both a researcher and educator, she is committed to fostering critical thinking, informed citizenship, and lifelong learning.
