Describe Your Research
We use a method of gene regulation called RNA interference (RNAi) to inhibit both the lifespan and the reproduction of pea aphids, a common pest to the legume plant family. We use methods of biochemistry to extract RNA, and target specific genes in pea aphids to "knockdown" gene function in the aphids. This research is intended to work as a sort of insect specific pest control which would not affect other organisms in the environment.
What was it like sharing your research?
I have had an incredible amount of opportunities to share my research findings. Through the K-INBRE (Kansas Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence) organization, I have received two grants during my time in the research lab. Through this opportunity I have been able to travel to conferences to present. I have participated in the regional K-INBRE symposium and presented a poster in both Kansas City and Manhattan Kansas in January 2023 & 2024. Additionally, in the summer of 2024, I was able to travel to Washington DC to the national conference (NISBRE) and present a poster there. This research has given me incredible opportunities to travel, meet new people, and learn a great deal about my field.
What are your future career goals?
My future goals first include a PhD in biochemical research. I am planning on entering the PhD program at Kansas State this coming fall in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics department. The research that I have done at FHSU with Dr. Balthazor has been an incredible opportunity to prepare for a research driven program and to bolster my resume to be accepted into such a great program at a larger school. Following a PhD, I plan to work in a research lab working in molecular biology or biochemistry. There are several avenues in which I can take but I am certainly open to both industrial and academic work.
Why should other students get involved in research?
I would recommend students to get involved with research activities at FHSU because they are an incredible opportunity to further your expertise outside of the classroom. Research opportunities also provide you the opportunity to travel, work hands on, and potentially find a new career path. In the chemistry department specifically, I would recommend all of the professors that currently have research projects as potential mentors, they are all great.
