Describe Your Research

My research project reconstructed early American twentieth-century Keystone View Company stereographs of Mexico and examined the imperial rationale embedded into them. They depicted Mexico as a country filled with impoverishment, abundant resources, and a land of economic opportunity. The stereographs played on American racist and paternalistic attitudes towards foreign populations and tried to depict that United States' investment and capital benefitted the local inhabitants of Mexico.

What was it like sharing your research?

I shared my research at the Kansas Association of History (KAH) Conference in March 2025 and it was a thoroughly positive and informative experience. Members in the audience asked me meaningful thought-provoking questions and exhibited a genuine interest in my work. I presented in a Latin American panel with three other scholars and saw vastly interesting work that showed a burgeoning research field with plenty of work to do in the future.

What are your future career goals?

I aspire to become a university professor specializing in Latin American history. This research experience taught me the standard of quality my work should meet to showcase to other scholars of similar interests. I also gained valuable insight into presentation skills and conference etiquette. Professional mannerisms and behavior are integral to building strong network connections and a positive conference experience. Additionally, this opportunity strengthened my Curriculum Vitae. With recognitions and presentations of my work, I can more effectively stand out among other PhD applicants.

Why should other students get involved in research?

Scholarly and research experiences allow us to gain the practical and professional knowledge needed to excel in these types of environments. Moreover, they help foster stronger networking connections with individuals that are established and informed within your relative field which can significantly enhance future job prospects. Overall, research and scholarly activities at FHSU are hubs of beneficial opportunities for students.
