Manually Upgrade to Windows 11
Windows 10 was released in 2015 and will no longer be supported by Microsoft as of October 2025. Accordingly, FHSU Technology Services is planning to upgrade all university-owned Windows 10 (or older) PCs to Windows 11.
While the transition to Windows 11 is mandatory, the instructions below will allow FHSU faculty and staff to proactively upgrade your university-owned computer at your convenience and avoid the inconvenience of an automated upgrade later.
The upgrade to Windows 11 is easy.
How to Upgrade:
- Plan for approximately 1-2 hours of downtime.
- Save all important files to your OneDrive or the N:\ drive.
- Begin the upgrade using Upgrade Method 1 below.
Recommendations:
- Begin the upgrade just before leaving work for the day. Close all apps, begin the upgrade, and then lock the computer. Everything should be ready by morning.
- If the installer says your computer isn't compatible with Windows 11, submit a Technology Support Request Form for assistance.
- Click Start.
- Type "Check", and then click Check for Updates.
- If you see the offer for Windows 11 (like the image below), click Download and Install.

- NOTE: If you don't see the option to upgrade, proceed to Method 2, below.
- Installation will proceed in the background, and you may continue to work normally, but save often, as your computer may reboot without warning.
- Reboot your computer when prompted. The upgrade is complete once you're able to log back in.
- Download and run the Windows 11 upgrade assistant:
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2171764 - Click Accept and Install.
- NOTE: If you receive an error about system requirements or don't see this button, your computer isn't compatible with Windows 11. Submit a Technology Support Request Form to request an upgrade.
- You may continue to work during the upgrade, but do not close the installer.
- Your computer may reboot multiple times. The upgrade is complete once you're able to log back in.
Please submit a ticket with TigerTech so a replacement computer or workaround can be provided.
You don't need to upgrade now. FHSU-owned property will upgrade automatically before October 2025 to maintain security.
To find out, click Start, type About, and then click About (or About this PC). Look for "Edition" to see which version of Windows you're running.
Deployment is scheduled to start during the Spring 2025 semester.
Until Windows 11 is mandatory, it is possible to uninstall it. Contact TigerTech for assistance.
Your files and applications will remain as-is. However, you should save everything important to your OneDrive or the N:\ drive for eventualities.
