American Democracy Project at FHSU
The American Democracy Project (ADP) at FHSU is a university-wide initiative dedicated to preparing the next generation of informed and engaged citizens. Its mission is to help students develop the civic knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute meaningfully to their communities and strengthen our democracy.
Fort Hays State University launched its American Democracy Project in 2004. Originally housed in the Department of Political Science, ADP now resides in the Department of Communication Studies, Law, and Political Science, following the merger of the former departments. This combined department reflects FHSU’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to civic learning, public engagement, and democratic education.
Our Mission
The mission of the American Democracy Project at FHSU is to promote civil discourse, education, and engagement at the local, state, and national levels of government to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to be active, engaged citizens in our democracy.
National Initiative
Nationally, the American Democracy Project was founded in 2003 by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). FHSU is one of the four participating universities in Kansas.
Through diverse civic and political engagement programs, ADP encourages students to explore their role in democratic life, practice constructive dialogue, and make a positive impact within their communities and beyond.
