Human Resource Management Series
Are you a supervisor or manager seeking ways to effectively manage your employees? Are you an HR Manager needing guidance to assist your supervisors and managers to manage employees consistently and effectively? This HR Workshop Series is for you as it will provide participants with user-friendly tools and approaches to manage employees. Participants can attend the series, or select one or two workshops of interest. Workshops will benefit HR Managers, Supervisors, and Managers. HR Managers are encouraged to bring the supervisors and managers within their organization to gain common skills in managing employees. Supervisors and managers who attend without an HR Manager will be provided tools and approaches to manage employees for quality outcome. HR Managers who are not able to bring their supervisors/managers, and attend solo, will come away with knowledge and materials designed to easily present back to the supervisors and managers.
Managing Absences in the Workplace provides a framework for supervisors, managers, and HR managers to manage both day-to-day absences and long-term absences. Productive workers are more critical than ever in today’s workforce. Participants will learn approaches and be provided tools to effectively manage absences.
Learning Objectives
- Application of approaches and tools to manage day-to-day absences
- Practices to best manage long-term absences for the least possible impact to the organization
- Understanding the basics of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Understanding the basics of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Ruth Bealer
Ruth Bealer, SHRM-SCP has experience in both the public and private sector, and currently serves as the owner and operator of HR Success Live. Ruth brings a wealth of experience in employee and labor relations, performance management, culture change, and has an HR generalist background. Ruth has worked with major corporations as well as with mid-size local organizations. Participants will find her approach to human resources and workplace issues to be very practical and easy to implement. She brings concept and theory to life with her examples of challenges faced by Human Resources professionals and Supervisory personnel.
This workshop provides guidance and tools to manage poor performers, employees meeting expectations, and star performers. In today’s work environment, managing performance and providing feedback are key to retaining good employees. Participants will learn to manage performance on a day-to-day basis, to provide performance feedback on a periodic basis, to address poor performance, and to successfully tackle long-standing performance problems. In addition, tips and strategies will be provided to keep motivation in place for star performers and those meeting expectations.

- Communicate goals and expectations to each team member
- Manage balanced performance check-ins
- Determine when it is appropriate to use formal disciplinary action
- Understand the importance of documentation and apply techniques to properly document employee performance

Robert Lloyd
Dr. Robert Lloyd is an award-winning teacher and researcher in the Department of Management at Fort Hays State University. In addition to teaching management courses, he has led students on travel courses to the Caribbean, South America, and Europe. He serves as a consultant for the Management Development Center and regularly provides guest lectures at universities around the world. Dr. Lloyd brings more than a decade of industry experience to higher education. In addition to private-industry consulting, he also managed his own fertilizer merchandising firm and real estate investments. He worked for six years as a commodities marketer for Koch Industries in Wichita, KS, spent several summers on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska as an outdoor adventure guide and manager, and served one season as auxiliary staff at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. He speaks fluent Spanish and conversational German and French.
