The administration at Fort Hays State University recently approved a wage increase for adjunct faculty teaching in the FHSU Virtual College, taking effect in the fall 2015 semester.

Adjunct faculty of all levels will be compensated an additional $60 per credit hour they teach, totaling a rate of $726.67 per credit hour or $2,180 for a three-hour course. Adjuncts who have taught for 11 years or more will be compensated $926.66 per credit hour or $2,780 for a three-hour course.

This year's adjunct salary increase is the first phase of a three-year plan to increase all levels of adjunct salaries by a total of $166.66 per credit-hour, effective in the fall 2017 semester. When all three phases are complete, new adjuncts will be compensated $2,500 per three-hour course, and adjunct faculty who have taught 11 years or more will be compensated $3,100 per three-hour course.

The salary goal of $2,500 per three-hour course for new adjunct faculty will bring FHSU adjunct pay in line with the national averages, said Dennis King, director of the Virtual College.

"Our hard-working adjunct faculty are instrumental in facilitating great online courses for thousands of students, and we are excited to bring them the compensation they deserve," said King.
