Describe Your Research

An investigation of the attitudes University instructors have toward students who stutter. Communication sciences and Disorders instructors and other majors instructors were compared to one another. Using the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes- Stuttering (POSHA-S), data was collected from 170 instructors from across the country.

What was it like sharing your research?

Presenting my research has allowed me to connect with many people and learn even more about the field of Communication Disorders. It is rewarding to share your hard work with others and present a final product that you are proud of. I have found a passion for stuttering advocacy though working on this research and look forward to educating others through my presentation. It is exciting to be apart of research within the field that I will one day be working in and add to the knowledge about such an important and current subject.

What are your future career goals?

In the future, I hope to obtain a masters degree in speech pathology and work as a speech language pathologist for the pediatric population. Aside from expanding my knowledge of this subject, this experience has provided me with professional skills that I would not have gotten in my typical undergraduate degree. Skills that I have learned include collaborating with others professionally, learning how to write in professional language, and so much about the research process. My biggest takeaway from this experience is the ability to make mistakes and learn from them. At the beginning of my experience I made mistakes and did not know much. But because I was willing to learn, I found that asking questions and correcting your mistakes is a valuable skill that I will take with me.

Why should other students get involved in research?

I would invite others to participate in a research experience at FHSU because of the great opportunities it can provide you and the supportive faculty that are going to help you succeed. Not only does it help you get your foot in the door, but these experiences can provide you with many skills that will benefit you in your future career. At Fort Hays, all of the faculty that I have experienced have been encouraging and want to see me succeed. They care that I am gaining the proper skills and setting myself up for future opportunities that I may have. An experience like this is so beneficial and gives you a chance to take part in something that can make a difference.
