Corey (Gier) Hirsch Bachelor of Social Work, 2015 Adoption Social Worker, St. Francis Community Services, Hays, KS
The FHSU Social Work Department is a one of a kind, special experience. I learned from professionals who have so much experience in the field, and are still working as social workers while teaching. There is nothing like getting hands on experience, and they help you do that within the department. The classes are small enough so that you don't get lost in the crowd, which was important to me. The social work profession is certainly not easy, but if you dive into it ready to learn and help others, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Just when you think you've gotten the hang of it, something new is thrown your way--it's a profession of constant learning. There are days when you feel like giving up, but that's when you must look at the successes with families that you have helped along the way!

The Department of Social Work helped me greatly in discovering who I am as a person. It motivated me to pursue my career as a social worker even more. I realized that the world of social work is everywhere and that the possibilities are endless. I love the school setting for social work. After my first visit to FHSU I felt very at home. My parents were very impressed with our instructors in the department. I loved being a part of the social work club. I did not just receive an education, but I also received incredible life lessons. Janette Vargas Bachelor of Social Work, 2014
Bilingual Family Support Specialist for Kansas Children's League, Healthy Families Program, Kansas City, MO
The Social Work Department helped build the foundation to begin my social work career. The instructors were very attentive to the needs of the students and created a safe learning environment for myself and my peers. Through one-on-one interaction, as well as peer group and community involvement, the social work department gave me the opportunity to grow and learn from others. I believe that it is essential to learn from the individuals we serve and allow ourselves to be exposed to different cultures. It is in the times of discomfort that we truly grow and develop our own unique skills.
