Elementary Education

The Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education (PreK-6) - Traditional Certification) curriculum includes foundational and advanced coursework in educational theory, classroom instruction, and child development. All courses meet the Kansas State Department of Education's pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade certification requirements.

The program culminates in clinical teaching placements and practical field experiences that connect theory with real classroom application. Coursework is available entirely online, allowing students to manage their learning around professional and personal commitments. Two examples are TEEL 836 and READ 853.

Teel 836: Introduction To The Teaching Profession

This course is foundational for individuals interested in becoming educators. It provides a comprehensive overview of the teaching profession, focusing on various aspects of education, classroom dynamics, and the broader societal context with a focus on elementary education (PREK-6th grade).

Read 853: Advanced Science Of Reading

This course is designed to support candidates in integrating the science of reading theory into assessment and instructional practice. Students will engage with concepts of phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, morphology, etymology, syntax, fluency, and comprehension. Students will also develop and broaden their understanding of writing and literacy assessment. This course prepares students for the Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction (KPEERI) exam.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education (PreK-6) - Traditional Certification) program will be eligible to apply for their initial Kansas teaching license in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The degree program couple with classroom teaching experience lay the foundation to move into a wide range of teaching roles and education careers both within and outside classroom.

Elementary School Teacher

As licensed elementary teachers, graduates will work directly with pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade students, creating engaging lessons in core subjects such as math, science, reading, and social studies. Teachers will lead classroom instruction, manage student behavior, communicate with parents, and support children's academic and social development. These roles form the foundation of public and private education systems.

Kindergarten Teacher

Graduates may specialize in early childhood instruction by teaching kindergarten and providing developmental and academic support for students as they begin their educational journey. That career focuses on establishing foundational literacy, math skills, and social-emotional learning through age-appropriate methods that foster curiosity and growth in young learners.

Reading Interventionist

With additional experience or training, a Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education (PreK-6) - Traditional Certification) graduate can serve as a reading specialist or interventionist in elementary schools. These professionals assess students' reading levels, provide individualized support, and collaborate closely with classroom teachers to enhance literacy outcomes.

Instructional Coach

Instructional coaches work with educators to enhance teaching effectiveness by providing feedback, professional development, and support with curriculum and assessment strategies. These roles allow Master of Science in Education (Elementary Education (PreK-6) - Traditional Certification) graduates to become leaders within their school community, improving teaching quality and student outcomes through collaboration and mentorship.

Educational Consultant

Some graduates pursue positions with educational service agencies or private organizations where they develop teaching materials, lead training workshops, or advise schools on curriculum planning and instructional design. These roles often afford broader influence across multiple districts or educational initiatives, requiring strong pedagogical knowledge and practical communication skills.

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution. We require a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75. We'll review transcripts to verify successful completion of key general education coursework, including English Composition II, Speech/Oral Communication, and college-level mathematics. Additionally, all applications must be processed 2 weeks before the semester starts.

Required Coursework

We require a grade of B or better in English Composition II and Oral Communication/Speech and a C or better in a college-level math course. Applicants with lower grades in these subjects may need to retake classes to meet the qualification requirements.

Letters Of Recommendation

We require two letters of recommendation from professionals or academics. These should address the applicant's potential to become an effective pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade teacher as well as their academic capabilities and personal strengths relevant to the education profession.

Statement Of Purpose

Applicants must submit a written statement of at least 250 words explaining their motivations for pursuing licensure in elementary education. The statement must demonstrate graduate-level writing and explain how the applicant's characteristics support their goal of becoming a successful teacher.

Additional Documentation

Applicants must submit the following:

• Completed Admission Criteria Acknowledgement form
• Completed Program Expectations form
• A clean disciplinary record in past FHSU education programs, if applicable

Program Probation Policy

Applicants placed on probation or removed from any FHSU teacher education program must wait 12 months before reapplying to the program. Readmission is not guaranteed, and if accepted, it will result in a probationary period for the entire program.

• Individuals previously removed from the MSE Elementary or MSE Secondary programs at FHSU must wait a minimum of 12 months from their last enrolled semester before reapplying. Reapplication does not guarantee acceptance. If re-admitted, candidates will be placed on academic probation for the remainder of the program.

Additional Departmental Requirements

Upon admission to the MSE program, students must meet additional departmental requirements to participate in field placements. These requirements are facilitated through an online graduate practicum course. Please note that these steps are separate from the FHSU Graduate School and are coordinated by the Department of Teacher Education.

Students must submit verification of the following:

• National Background Check:
  A current, national background check must be completed after program admission.
• Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test:
  A negative TB skin test must be completed after program admission. Most TB tests require approximately three days for completion.
• Professional Liability Insurance:
  Proof of valid professional liability insurance coverage is required.
